1077.0. "Some questions about using PCM" by 36125::GLICKMAN (writing from Newport,RI) Thu Nov 02 1995 15:22

    Hi,

Looking to put up PCM 1.6 at customer site that's a VAXcluster of
6 nodes running OpenVMS 6.1 and I have a few questions:

      (1) Do I need OSF/Motif or can I just use the character cell interface?

      (2) Can I start using PCM on just one node in the VAXcluster and add
on the others as we feel comfortable with it?

      (3) Customer is concerned with the reliability of the VAXcluster.
Are there any things I need to be aware of in terms of not having
PCM break any of the nodes in the VAXcluster (or the entire
          VAXcluster itself)?

      (4) Is this a good weekend probject as opposed to some evening when
          users want access?

Appreciating any inputs. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get
    into the thick of it.

    Thanks!

You can use the CC interfaces but you'll be missing out on some of the
    best functionality of the product.

These two questions concern me. Are you planning on having one of the
nodes in the VAxcluster act as the PCM engine? If so then this is
unsupported because if you lose quorum in the cluster then you have lost
the consoles for *all* nodes in the cluster. The PCM engine needs to
be independent of the nodes it services.

It's no big deal to install PCM and configure it. This kinda confirms
what I mentioned above about PCM being installed on the cluster it
manages. This question tells me that that was the plan. Don't do it!

    re .1

About questions two and three, its just that this customer is
extremely paranoid about up time of this production VAXcluster and
I thought by adding in one node at a time was a good idea to alleviate
some of their fears. They usually test things out alot before putting
    them into production.

Then maybe I misread your question. As stated, it sounded like you were
going to install the PCM software onto a node in the Cluster you were
going to manage with PCM and this is a no-no. The PCM engine needs to be
independent of any cluster that it manages. If the engine is
independent and you asking if you can add just one node - sure no
problem. There should be *no* downtime necessary on any of the managed
    nodes.
