1055.0. "Question on Console/Monitor Interface" by 47119::SYSTEM () Fri Oct 20 1995 14:37

Hello,

I have some doubts about the Console/Monitor Interface, I hope there is someone
who wants to answer me.

Using the old version of VCS and the PCM 1.5 when I tried to connect to the
console of a system defined into the VCS/PCM database I get a DECterm window
showing one of the two following cases:

- The console prompt (>>>) after a system shutdown, prompt from which I could
enter any console command (boot, show, set,...) as I were directly connected to
the system using the OPA0: port.

- The console output (e.g. the OPCOM messages) and using the <return> or a
special control key I get the standard request of username and password as I
were directly connected to the system via OPA0: port.

Then I decided to install PCM 1.6 to integrate PCM and PSW via OSCINT. All the
integration is ok, the repair routines work fine, but I was completely lost to
find the "window console".

I understand that the Console/Monitor Interface is the substitute of the old
DECterm window emulating the console, but I am in trouble to use this interface.

Today for some reasons one of the customer decided to shutdown one of the
connected systems. On the Console/Monitor interface I looked all the output of
the standard shutdown. But when I looked for the usual prompt (>>>) to restart
the system I was not able to find it!

Clicking on the system I get a pull down menu with some items; the first is
"Connect Console" and one of the last is "Monitor Interface". I clicked on both
of them and I get two different windows with a very similar ouptut, but none of
both displayed the console prompt (>>>) to reboot the system.

I searched on the documentation to find some suggestion but the description was
not very helpfull. Moreover ther is not any recall/comparison to the past
version.

Any explanation is very appreciated. Thanks.

PCM functions the same way. it sounds like noone ever halted the
processor. Have you tried doing a CONSOLE CONNECT node-name and
issuing a CTRL-P or tried to send a BREAK? The HALT sequence will
    be one of the two.
