| Geert, You'll be happy to know I have made some progress on this
problem. You'll find the archive has completed and what we are trying
to do is tell ENS that the archive is done but ENS has stopped talking
to us. I found a problem within the IPC code that is having a definite
impact on this problem and may explain several others. I have to
check the code change in and do a build as it's far to difficult to
just patch. Stay tuned.

May I put in another couple of cents worth on this archiving problem? Though I
hope that it is now unnecessary...
We observe that the failure takes place right at the start of a systems archive.
It would appear that on VMS the final copy of data that is not to be archived
over the old log files is done in a subprocess.
Could it be that the next archive starts before this process is completely dead
and so has not released/deleted something that the new archive needs?
In my command procedure of lots of cons arch system I put a wait for 10 seconds
inbetween each archive, it ran the whole way through successfully...

team must grant permission for the fix to be distributed.

Hi Dan,
I've got a pointer from Laser that the ARCHIVE problem
is fixed in NSI_111.BCK. I copied NSI_111.BCK file
to the customer. He extracted the CONSOLE$ARCHIVE file,
replaced the image, shut/restart PCM. Even a reboot.
He still has the ARCHIVE problem and it's still the same
system. I asked to shut PCM and copy the node.times,.log,.events
file to me. I tested these files on my system. The archive
of these files worked fine on my system.
Is it enough to copy the CONSOLE$ARCHIVE.EXE file or all these
files in the NSI_111.BCK file ?
If needed we can log in via X25 at this customer's site.
What can we do ?

| Geert, You need to install the whole thing. The problem was in a
common piece of code used by all PCM components - except maybe EXTRACT.
if it hangs again, I need you to use SDA to find the mailbox again and
then after you have done the SDA> SHOW DEVICE MBAxxx command do:
SDA> READ SYS$SYSTEM:SYSDEF
SDA> FORMAT UCB

Hi Dan,
The customer put a wait of 10 sec between the CONSOLE ARCHIVE commands.
And now it seems to work.
Conclusion the NSI_111.BCK didn't solve his ARCHIVE problem.

So far ive seen it sent out for 8 IPMTs and it hasn't seen any success with any
of them.

| Yes actually. There were two problems in the IPC code that needed
to be fixed and they were. The call stack provided by Geert is very
interesting as it's a *completely* different hang than the original
problem and thats the next step.
