Not really. Your question has a rather long history actually. There has
been a long standing issue with OSF/Digital Unix systems in terms of
remote management. The problem is that if you SET CONSOLE SERIAL Motif
doesn't work. On OpenVMS systems you can set the console to be the
serial line and still maintain full functionality on the graphics head.
There is a push to allow this same functionality on Digital Unix. See
note 93 and it's replies for more info.

| hi Dan,
thanks for the info, so i conclude that all the workstations that need to
keep their graphical interface for some reason cannot be managed in a central
way via PCM, correct ?
Now what about systems where the customer is happy with the 'serial'
console ? In the config that is proposed i do not see any terminalserver
and so on ..... then how do we set these systems up in the PCM config ?
Can we have a 'simple VT' as console (so system is directly and local
reachable) AND manage this system on the same moment via PCM ?

| sorry, just got other info giving me a better view on how it
should work :
ignore the remark on the 'serial' console ... we want to keep
the graphical interface and redirect via serial port to central
station 600 (via RS or terminal server) but there are a lot of
doubts over here that xdm can not be started 'off side'
/dev/console.
Concrete is will test this in real life this afternoon or tomorrow

1030.4 | name of 'graphical device' | 54831::BUGGENHOUT | | Thu Oct 12 1995 09:29 | 11 |
| testing all this we came to the conlusion that problem is not xdm
but accessing the graphical device not serving as console anymore.
Of course if we can by no means access this device, we can not start
xdm (or getty) ... on it.
So we need to replace the grahical console with a Xterminal and redirect
console to serial port and further to PCm
Hopes this can be solved soon !!

1030.5 | it WORKS | 54831::BUGGENHOUT | | Thu Oct 12 1995 10:13 | 17 |
| here i am again with good news : perhaps the initial question was
not clear (i even had difficulties with it) but i took a 2100 AXP
redirected console >>> set console serial
connected a VT (or later a terminalserver on it for PCM)
kept my graphical ex-console and just started xdm (no special options,
this screen is seen as :0) and there it goes.
So now the developer works local on the graphical user interface while
important messages go to the console so to PCM
Hope this info can help others although it took some replies to
get this all done

You've now answered your own question. There used to be a problem with
this on digital Unix systems but it seems based on your experiements
that that isno longer the case.
