1020.0. "PCM console and graphics console at same time??" by 33972::CHANDRASEK () Tue Oct 03 1995 22:19
Cross-posted in Digital UNIX notes conference.
My customer who was sold the Console Manager, was told that he could
have his 2100 consoles managed through this product, and also have
access to a local graphics console at the same time. He referred me to
the fact that he can do this with his VAX 8550, where his console is
managed through VCS, and he also has access to a loca console.
My interpretation is that the VAX 8550, 8700 and 9000 are special
machines which have a separate PDP-11/Micro-VA XII processor for the
console. The AXP 2100 in particular, has a console command
set console graphics|serial,
so at any one time you could either have it serial, and thus available
to the PCM, or it could be graphics and therefore local, but you cannot
have both available at the same time.
The customer also has not been sold a terminal server and again I told
him I didn't know of a way that PCM could control consoles without
a terminal server, whether it be LAT or TCP.
I want to check that what I just said is basically correct.
Regards, Kris.

| Kris,
Yes, you are correct; it's one or the other.
The customer could connect the remote console
port directly to a serial port on the system that PCM is running on.
This would mead that PCM would have to be in very close proximity to
the target system. Most users opt for the terminal server approach.
Also, with VCS, customers could order a special cable which would
effectively redirect the the console output to a regular terminal
(VT100 and the like). It was affectively an AB switch.

| As far as I remeber, if you set the console port to serial, you will
still be able to use the graphics device, but it will not have console
functions.

| re -1.
Thats correct. the serial line is "the console" when you do a "set
console serial" command.
