927.0. "MLS+ / MAXSIX???" by 51678::MALM (My God! It's full of stars...) Wed Aug 16 1995 07:59

Hi!

We've a customer that is going to use MLS+ and MAXSIX on some systems for
a special reason (=security). He also wants to manage/supervise the systems
with modern tools, probably like system watchdog, Console Manager, Netview etc.

Does anybody know if our polycenter products runs under MLS+ and/or MAXSIX,
either on the supervised or the supervising system?

regards

Well I don't know what the MLS+ and MAXSYS products do. Can you give us
some more info about them and maybe we can give you an answer.

MLS+ is a "security enhanced" version of Ultrix. MLS stands for "Multi Level
Security", what the "+" stands for is still a question... :-)

MAXSIX is some sort of TCP/IP... With more security features.

I'm quite convinced that PCM will do fine in supervising a MLS+ system, but
I wonder if it will run on a MLS+ system.

927.3not MLS+ as server host56525::KUNGFri Aug 18 1995 13:232
I remember talking with Phil Baxter about this, and the answer is
no we will not support MLS+ as a server host running PCM.
927.4we might not support it on the spd or from engineering but the CSC here is sure being pushed to support it... argh!42326::COFFEYJThe Uk CSC Unix Girlie.Tue Aug 29 1995 12:4920
Oh heck....

In that case digital in the UK are potentially in a nasty situation
with, probably the biggest security customer you can think of.

We currently have MLS+ machines running PCM (it installs and behaves
ok) however as MLS+ is based on OSF/1 V2.1 we can only install V1.5.

I've a customer call right now that there's sufficient pressure (for that
read money!) that supported or not we're being pushed to do all we
can. There are IPMTs being logged to compilers groups requesting
a kind of retro-fit of patches and if it turns out that 1.6 or
1.6's ECO would fix this customer problem there'll be a lot of
pressure to at least provide a version of 1.6 of PCM that has
been built on 2.1 so we can use it on MLS+ !

I'll check the changes so far or known setup problems obviously
but I suspect it may well be attempted to be escalated to engineering.

I hope they have a lot of pressure (read money) as this is obviously a
request for an enhancement IMHO and I can tell you that there is no
funding for us to just do it.

Well, for the other bits of this project there's a heck of a lot
that'll be withheld... others can explain it better (and I'll
get them to on an IPMT if I have to) ...

For the minute, as I said I'll hope maybe it's not something
fixed in 1.6 and it's just a matter of config... If I "pretend" it's
an OSF V2.1 system (which in effect it is with extra security
stuff on top) then maybe we'll get somewhere in here..
