895.0. "^P woes" by 49575::NEUWEILER (System Support Geneva) Thu Jul 27 1995 09:57

Hello,

A customer running PCM V1.5 on a DEC3000-300 with the MUP applied experiences
the following behaviour when he is connected to certain systems and presses ^P.
PCM asks for confirmation before sending a break to the console. On some of
the systems he gets the chevrons (>>>) on others there is no effect.
Even like systems do not behave in the same way (VAX4200's upgraded
from MV3400's).

There is a workaround which consists in redefining the ^P to some other
control character, thats what the customer did(^L). This way the ^P works on
all systems, but he is no more asked for confirmation. Is this expected
behaviour? Anyway this behaviour annoyes the customer very much.

Thanks for feedback,

Joerg

This is not a workaround, it is the correct way of doing things, it is
the difference between sending a BREAK signal and the ascii code for
  Control-P.

For a release post V1.6 we were planning a change in this area so that
you would be prompted when you tried to send the "Halt sequence" for a
machine (The halt sequence would have been defined as the BREAK signal
or Control-P or whatever your hardware expected). Sadly it doesnt look
like this is going to happen any time soon.

  Sorry.

Cheers,
Phil
