846.0. "V1.6 upgrade problems" by POLAR::HUTCH (Mike Hutchings, OMS Eastern Canada, Kanata) Fri Jun 30 1995 17:46
I've just upgraded a PCM 1.5 system to PCM 1.6. None of the 11 lat ports
are now reachable and I could use some help understanding why. The system
has been rebooted so it's not because the ports were previously allocated.
The ports were functional just before the upgrade.
This is the initial log information....

CONSOLE$DAEMON: Termination Mailbox created (status = 1), channel = 224
CONSOLE$DAEMON: Termination Mailbox unit = 30
I enabled CONSOLE$DEBUG and the startup revealed this....
Starting Console Manager Processes.
CMShm: Failed to map to section
%SYSTEM-W-NOSUCHSEC, no such (global) section
There were lots of gblsections available on the system but just for fun
I gave it some more.
I tried to stop PCM but that hung...
CTHVCS$ cons shut

Do You Really want to Shutdown Console Manager? (N) :y
Console Manager shutting down, Please Wait...
I've attached copies of the logfiles in CONSOLE$TMP at the end of this note.
The CONSOLE$ENS_DAEMON.LOG contained lots of non printable characters and it
would hang my session!
After adding some gblsections (now more than 300 free) and a reboot I've
come across another problem that was not there before. My CONSOLE$TMP area
is filling up with action routine log and com files. This is the contents
of one of them ...
$ Define CONSOLE$ACTIONNAME "Kanata Command Center"
%RMS-W-RTB, 348 byte record too large for user's buffer
I'm able to shutdown PCM now without hanging
Mike
Comment:
When I upgraded to PCM 1.5 some months ago I spent an extraordinary amount of
time working thru the problems. I upgraded to PCM 1.6 because I thought some
of these problems were corrected. It would appear that I'm headed down the
same path with this upgrade. From what I've seen so far I'm not at all
impressed with the stability of this release or this product.

| We used V1.6 through almost every build and never saw this. And we have
a few hundred systems being monitored in real production. (Running on
OpenVMS VAX V6.1).
Since the field test is over, you can escalate this problem in the normal
fashion. Posting in this conference will not get you immediate
support.

Re .1
Nice. I was expecting a "try this" or a "send us this logfile" response. I
did not expect a bugger off reply.
> Posting in this conference will not get you immediate support.
What are you talking about. Im most cases Notes IS the more timely way of
getting help. The other occasions I've seen a response like this is when the
noter does not know the answer or can't be bothered.
> And we have a few hundred systems being monitored in real production.
And how many host PCM platforms does this represent I might ask? As PCM can
support 200 consoles this could mean just 1 system!
The system I upgraded was originally V1.5 without the MUP installed. Did you
happen to test that upgrade path?
Although I have little time to play around I thought I take another look
myself. I discovered that the primary and secondary host fields were grayed
out in the windows display. I checked a post upgrade export file and found
that the Terminal_Device: parameter which is normally LTA0: was blank. The
Primary_Host and Secondary_Host fields were also blank. I deleted the systems
and recreated them with all the fields filled in. For some reason the
Terminal_Device: remains blank. I'm fairly sure this is why all my LAT
connections are failing (they do connect briefly). You would think something
like this would be decernable in the debug logs. I even tried creating a
whole new database but am still not able to get the Host fields to light up.
Now I'm downgrading.

846.3 | | OPG::PHILIP | And through the square window... | Wed Jul 05 1995 18:44 | 23 |
| Mike,
I dont know who Ron is in the previous reply, but he doesnt speak for
the engineering team, however he is correct in that NOTES is not a
reliable support mechanism and is in no way a substitute for the formal
IPMT process which is used when you log a call with a CSC.
The Primary/Secondary host fields DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, on OpenVMS, the
Terminal_Device field for LAT connections also does ABSOLUTELY nothing.
LAT devices get created by the software as and when it needs them.
Dont worry about the "no such (global) section" message, this is normal
if you have turned on debug.
The "%SYSTEM-F-ABORT, abort" failure status message from your lat ports
is the real problem here. Typically we have seen this problem because the
Terminal Server is hung up, using TSM to connect to the terminal server
and log the ports out, or rebooting the server usually fixes this for us.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Phil

| Relax. The reply shouldn't of been read as a "bugger off" reply. I just
wanted to show that there is a serious user of the software out there and
that if you really needed production level support, you should log a call.
We have 199 nodes being monitored on *one* OpenVMS VAX PCM V1.6 system
right now. All over LAT. And it works.
As noted, I'm not part of engineering, just a relatively satisfied user
and field test victim.

846.5 | same problem | 58379::HUTCH | Mike Hutchings, OMS Eastern Canada, Kanata | Fri Aug 18 1995 09:41 | 14 |

Hoping that the V1.6 ECO1 might contain a fix I decided it would be a good
time to try the upgrade again. I experienced the same problem, namely lat
port connection aborts
These lat ports are free. TSM and LCP both show them as being available.
I downgraded again by re-installed V1.5-MUPA and lat ports would then connect
properly.
Re .3
I usually don't have the luxury to be able log calls to the CSC as I'm internal

| May I access your system? You are the only person that has complained
of this problem and most sites use LAT as the connect mehod. I'd like
to see how things are configured.

846.7 | problem is 2 circuits | 58379::HUTCH | Mike Hutchings, GPS Canada, Kanata | Wed Dec 13 1995 13:58 | 31 |
|
I tried to upgrade another VMS system with Console Manager 1.6. This upgrade
again had problems establishing connection to lat ports. I think I now know
what the problem is. My systems are configured with 2 circuits. Most of the
decservers that are utilized for the VCS connections are on a private lan,
(the second circuit). These are the lat ports that V1.6 fails to connect to.
Lat ports are reachable thru the first circuit but all lat ports on the
second controller are failing.
V1.5 had no problem working with multiple circuits. Is this a bug with V1.6
or do I need to setup a logical or something to get CM to correctly use the
second circuit?
Mike
...this may help to better explain my configuration
