My customer is running PCM on a AlphaServer 1000, monitoring about 50 devices via termnal server connections. He is concerned about a hot backup in case the AlphaServer 1000 goes down, however this is the only Alpha system among many Vaxes in his shop. It seems that there are two alternatives: 1. Purchase 50 additional PCM licenses (about $35K ) and put them on an existing Vax and export/import the PCM Database from Alpha to Vax. or 2. Purchase a 2nd AlphaServer 1000 and SCSI cluster the two Alphas with VMS V6.2. ( about $20K ). What are the pluses/minuses of each senario? Will a SCSI cluster provide the hot backup for PCM that the customer is looking for ?? Thx, Dave Rifkin

Dave, Exactly what do you mean by "hot backup"? If you tell us what you expect to be doing we can give you a few ideas. Cheers, Phil

In this case, "hot backup" means if the AlphaServer goes down, the customer can continue to monitor his 50 devices via a second system with a minimum startup effort. Regards, Dave

Dave, Any of the hardware configs you have will work, I would suggest using PCM V1.6 and issuing a "@Console$Startup Install" on all the platforms, then on the live one issue a "CONSOLE INITIALIZE/NOCONFIRM". Now, if you have something like PSW monitoring the parent daemon process on your backup system, if it goes away, on your backup system you can then issue the initialize command. Cheers, Phil |
