621.0. "PCM vs VCS?" by 35890::BUCKLEY (ski fast,take chances,die young) Tue Feb 21 1995 16:41

I have a customer setting up a console management station using a VAXstation
4000-60 running VMS v6.1 and connecting to a VAX6640, VAX3800 and a VAX3100-95
all running VMS v5.5-2 (hardware release for 3100). They are using tcp/ip on
the 6640 (and maybe the others) from Wollengong. They may upgrade to alpha
in the future.
My Questions:

1. Will the telnet connections work with Wollengong or does it REQUIRE ucx?

2. If the management station is past VMS v6.0 but the managed nodes are at VMS
v5.5-2, are there any problems?

3. Can the display from the management station be redirected to a color X-term
as was the case in VCS?

4. Does polycenter System watchdog work with PCM?

I am familiar with VCS and "playing around" with PCM and need to recommend that
the customer set up one or the other product (VCS is currently installed on the
VAX 4000-60 as it has a copy of my system disk without license database).
Which product would YOU recommend?

No problems, there is no software on the managed nodes

>>3. Can the display from the management station be redirected to a color X-term
>>as was the case in VCS?

Yes, but the only display supported displays are colour.

>>4. Does polycenter System watchdog work with PCM?

Please can you clarify, if you mean can you pass events for PSW to PCM
and vice versa; no problem, there are are possible solutions ...

OSCint (talk to Guy Balaguer or Jean-Marc Soyez @VBE)
PSW ships an example procedure to pass events to PCM

VCS is a retired product, the customer should migrate to Console Manager.

Dan,

To answer your first question as Andy correctly answered the others...

>>1. Will the telnet connections work with Wollengong or does it REQUIRE ucx?

You can use either TGV Multinet or UCX, we will support both, however we
have not tried Wollongong, nor do we have a copy of the software, and so
have no idea if it will work or not, consequently we cannot support the
 use of Wollongong.

Cheers,
Phil
