596.0. "Console Shut Down for no apparent reason" by OTOOA::GMACDONALD (Its badluck to be superstitous) Thu Feb 02 1995 19:17

Hi. One of our customer's is having a problem with the Console manager
shutting down for no apparent reason. We have turned on Accounting for
the workstation (VMS 6.1) and the processes are shutting down with a
normal exit status. The CONSOLE$STARTUP procedure does not work after
it has gone down. The only way to restart it is to reboot the machine.
I have looked at the log file (I can't remember the name of it) and it
just says something like "Console manager shut down".

How do I find out what may be causing it to shut down?

Thanks. Grant.

Grant,

If you define/system console$debug "DAEMON" and then start up console
manager, you will get extra log files in CONSOLE$TMP: (one for each
controller process) in one of these you may find more information regarding
  the reason for the shutdown.

What version of PCM are you running? Do you have the MUP installed?

Cheers,
Phil

Phil, thanks for the reply. I'll try the debug option tomorrow. The version
of PCM they are running would be 1.5 from the November CD. I don't believe
the MUP update is installed. Is that in the KIT directory of the CD? I'll
check that tomorrow as well.

Thanks. Grant.

Hi,
no the MUP is not yey on the CD. It was released early January and the rounds
of the ConDist have not been completed.

The MUP kit is available from either the CSC TIMA database or you can pull
the kit from:
		OPG::CM$KIT:CONSOLEMUPA015.%

I recommend that you install the MUP before you heavily involved in debugging.

Please also note that setting the DEBUG generates a LOT!!!! of data like we log
information for every data packet logged so beware!!

Cheers Simon.,..
