590.0. "Archive loops with PCM 1.5 ECO1" by GIDDAY::BROOKS () Tue Jan 31 1995 06:11

    Hi,

    	I have a call open with a customer who is using PCM V1.5 with ECO 1
    on a VMS system with Motif V1.2 installed. The problem is that when
    using the "CONSOLE ARCHIVE/NOCONFIRM/before="today-14-" ALL" it hangs on
    the same system and enters a CPU loop.

    	I have done the following things to track down the problem but am
    unable to discover the fault. If there anything I'm missing or is this
    a bug?

    * Archive only the problem system using either
    		- CONSOLE ARCHIVE/NOCONFIRM/before="today-14-" PAR11
    		- console archive/hours=12/noconfirm par11

    * Check for symbol/log names that could affect/conflict with the archive
      process.

    * Archive process does work for the other systems OK.

    * Have SET WATCH/CLASS=FILE MAJOR. and the last thing it reported doing
    was "%XQP, Thread #0, Modify PAR11_OLD.EVENTS;1 (3938,5,0)Status:00000001"
    process enter CPU loop in [CONSOLE.][IMAGES]CONSOLE$ARCHIVE.EXE.

    Range of PC address have been collected.

    * Files were getting created in the Console$archive location
    	PAR11_NEW.EVENTS;
    	PAR11_NEW.LOG;
    	PAR11_NEW.TIMES;
    	PAR11_OLD.EVENTS
    	PAR11_OLD.LOG
    	PAR11_OLD.TIMES

    * and the "CONSOLE$ARCHIVE" version is "PCM V1.5-002"
      link date/time: 12-SEP-1994 12:52:54.18.

Nigel,

  Can you get your customer to install the MUP kit which will take your
  customer to V1.5-006, we fixed some archive problems for the MUP.

  If this doesnt fix the problem, can you obtain a copy of all the log and
  archive files for the system which causes the loop and copy them to OPG::,
  let me know when you have done this and I will try and take a look.

  You should also escalate this problem via IPMT if you want us to give this
  more than just a "quick look when we get time".

Cheers,
Phil

    Thanks Phil,

    	Yeh I just put this query in just to check that I'm not missing out
    on something, like a MUP. I should have looked at note 2.nn first.
    I'll get the customer to install this first then I'll bother you via
    IPMT.

    Thanks again,
    Nigel

    To add to what Phil said, you'll need to have your customer shutdown
    PCM and rename/delete any logfiles for systems that are known to cause
    the compute loop and then restart the software. Do this after you apply
    the mup. The problem had to do with some "logical" corruption in the
    logfile and we while the MUP fixes the problem in the daemon if you
    still have a "bad" logfile you can still have wierd things happen.

       Dan
590.4Will shutdown/delete/restart PCM after mupGIDDAY::BROOKSMon Feb 06 1995 00:3816

    Thanks for the extra info, I'll ask the customer if he requires the
    console data to use CONSOLE EXTRACT, which can read the logfile data.

    Then rename or delete the logile. I cannot update you on this problem
    until the customer has received and installed the MUP. The customer
    has had a political dispute going on, where protestors have blocked
    all supplies including the MUP from arriving.

    I just hope he doesn't die from starvation.

    Cheers Nigel

    The problem still exists and has moved to another system.

Hi,
   there are FT kits on the net for PCM V1.6. This release is a bug fix release
and I have done some work on archive. Could you get the FT V1.6 kit to the
customer and have him try the archive on this version. Also in this version is
a file verify utility, have him run it against the offending system files (with
PCM not running). Please feedback swiftly if he encounters problems as we have a
chance to iron out bugs before release.

Cheers simon...
