589.0. "Security question" by STKEIS::BYSTAM (The answer is 42) Mon Jan 30 1995 18:56

Hi,

I have looked but not found an answer yet to a question from a customer.

This specific customer is very fixed to maintain a high level of security. They
asked me it it is possible to secure the consolee port if you connect it to a
decserver. What they were thinking about was to set a password in the DECserver
so only the PCM software could allocate the port. They don't feel confident
today because there is a small possibility that somebody could grab the console
if the PCM software is down.

Is there any way of solving this in the current version?

Stefan,
       no there is not a way of doing this as the terminal server does not do
any validation on the address of the incoming connection. We have mentioned this
to Terminal Server eng before, but they are not inclined to do anything without
a good business reason. Customer feedback of requring this is the best I can
think of. I suggest you pose this question to them.

The sort of thing we have mentioned before is on TELNET to only respond to nodes
which are in the IP name file on the server. In this way all other connect
attempts would be rejected. Currently the port just accepts the connections.

Cheers Simon....
