| Sigh... here we go again....
How can a customer *POSSIBLY* expect us to have scan profiles
for non-Digital CPU'S and operating systems!!
As stated in another note in the conference, there is a large port file
available in OPG::CM$KIT: This port file contains scans for many
OpenVMS messages and console messages for many VAX cpu's.

I didn't mean to say that the customer is EXPECTING us to deliver scan
profiles for non-Digital CPU's and operating system. But the scan
profiles I am looking for, have probably already been created by (many)
others. So why create them again ???
This notes conference seems to me a good place to exchange things like that.
So if there is anybody who can help me with these scan profiles, then
this would save a lot of time.

579.3 | How about AXP Hardware ? | IJSAPL::PEURSUM | Systems Specialist, EIS Holland | Thu Jan 26 1995 08:09 | 12 |

Dan,
A customer could at least expect digital to deliver some scanfiles for
AXP Hardware... and for DEC-OSF/1 ! We don't do that...
I think this is bad service to customers. As for non-digital equipment:
you are right. But the overall customer perception after installing PCM
and not finding any scanfile is *not so good*...

Paul.

| RE. all
First of all, I agree that a system should be in place to accomodate
the rapid creation and dissemination of "scan" data. Having said that,
this issue has been around since day 1 of VCS - over 7 years ago which
says a lot in and of itself. Numerous ideas have been proposed to resolve
this issue yet none implemented. The most recent proposal, and the one
that makes the most sense, is to make it a requirement of all
engineering projects such that any device that has a console or any
software that sends messages to a console that a file will be generated
that contains message data in some standard format. This file will be
run through a program that will create a port file ready for import by
the PCM editor. This proposal was met with less than enthusiastic
response. There are also many other issues including:
Who will be responsible for maintaining everything.?
Who will fund it?
Guess what???!!! Everybody complains that there are no scan profiles
and the moment you ask the funding question things get reeeaaaallll
quiet!!
Noone wants this issue resolved more than I do. I would love to see
funding made available and the necessary manpower allocated to
perform this work!!!
The best thing that everyone can do is send mail to the PCM product
management as they need all the ammunition they can get to use in
convincing the powers that be that this issue is strategically
important.
Re -2.
>Not EXPECTING....HOPING....
Sorry if I sounded harsh but they way the base note was worded it
sounded like the customer wasn't going to buy the product if we didn't
have scan data for non-digital hardware/software.
