500.0. "Can Console Manager work properly in I18N environ" by HGOVC::JOSEPHKWOK () Thu Dec 01 1994 04:46

Hi,

Does anyone try Console Manager on an DEC OSF/1 V3.0 with I18N saveset
installed. I had a problem and I guess that Console Manager cannot
run properly when I18N savesets are installed. It may be Console
Manager which will use locale services are not compatible.

I got a core dump everytime I tried to use the Console Editor to
create (no matter creating system, group or user)

I can do everything fine on a system without the I18N savesets
(i.e. IOS*300)

Any help is appreciate.
If you need the core file, I can provide it to you.

Thanks in advance,
Joseph

Any latest news on that?
I can provide the core file for console_editm, problem is reproducable!
Since very little symbolic informattion from console_editm, I can tell
the exact problem. But it seems to be related to the XmText under libXm.so.

Joseph,
well done for prodding me!! This one slipped my mind amid the whelter of
jobs after vacation. Well enough of excuses.

Today I installed the IOS subsets for HongKong on my OSF/1 V 3.0 machine, rebuilt
kernel and booted the new kernel.

Test results:

Language set to English (American):

C3 and editor both work, the American spelling of COLOR appears.

Language set to English (British):

C3 and editor both work, the British spelling of COLOUR appears.

Language set to Chinese:

C3 and editor both work, American spelling of COLOR and a different font appears
for all the text!!

Not sure about the reason for the font change as we don't muck about with the
font i.e. we let Motif do it's stuff.

So the bottom line is that I do not see your problem.

Cheers Simon....
500.4On further examination!!!OPG::SIMONThu Dec 15 1994 15:5514
Joseph,
it looks as if I spoke too soon with the previous reply. Although the
C3 and editor both come up, I cannot get to some of the dialog boxes. This
is rather strange as the code is a single UID file!!

Even stranger is that putting the editor up from another machine (OpenVMS) to
the workstation does work.

Even stranger still it fails displaying to antoer workstation without I18N stuff
installed!!!

Hmmm!!!!

Cheers Simon....

Joseph,
we built the editor on the system I installed the I18N stuff and this
fixed the problem.

I can only assume that the I18N install replaces either X or Motif sharable
libraries and that they are not fully backwards compatible as our base code
is built against Motif V1.1.3.

I must therefore suggest that you speak to the OSF folks about this as they
should provide compatibility.

Cheers Simon.....
