472.0. "basic questions on POLYCENTER Console Manager?" by TENNIS::KAM (Kam USDS (714)261-4133 (DTN 535) IVO) Thu Nov 10 1994 20:11

Trying to learn more about this product. I was kind-of-informed that any
device with an RS232 port could be used, monitored, and controlled with
the POLYCENTER Console Manager.

We have VAXstation II/GPX's with DB9 connections with console output going to
the large monitors. Can this system be used with the console monitor?

Can we just take the console ports from our workstations and connect them
to terminal servers and have all output directed there?

Some document indicated that PCM could be used from boot of systems. Does
this apply to direct connected RS232 connections or can a terminal server
connection also be used?

	Regards,

Absolutely! What you need are the appropriate adapters and cables AS
    follows:

    H8575-B - 9-pin to DEcconnect adapter

BC16E-x - DECConnect cable where x is the length of the cable

88575-A - 25-pin to decconnect adapter - this adapter is optional
depending on what kind of decserver you use etc.

Note: The console must be "directed" to the 9-pin port on the MVII
based GPX's. The best way to direct the console to the 9-pin port
is to change the address on the VCB02 graphics board from
777400 to 777402. Motif will still start but the console roms
on the microvax processor won't find the board and thus the
console becomes the 9-pin port and not the graphic monitor and
          keyboard.

Absolutely. Mentioned above are the steps to make the 9-pin port the
console. VS 3100's and 4000's have an alternate console switch labeled
S3. Power of the station, toggle the switch, power onthe station and
now the printer port MMJ connector is the console.

You have full console control regardless of the interconnect method.
When setup properly PCM is *THE* console.
