451.0. "Got 200+ devices for PCM - How?" by 42397::JEPSON (EntropyBuster) Tue Oct 25 1994 11:38

I have a customer who wishes to monitor in excess of the
published 200 devices limit - probably about 300. They will be
using PCM running on a DECstation 3000/600 alpha box using
OSF/1. The devices to be monitored will be mainly alpha
         workstations and network boxes.

Note 283.* seems to indicate that a practical limit is more
like 400 devices, although this is perhaps unsupported.

Please explain what the constraint is that produces the "200
device" limit and advise on what my customer should do.

Could they just connect them all up, if so, would Digital
support the configuration? Alternatively would they have to use
two machines each running PCM to cover all the devices they
         need?

         Answers/ideas and/or pointers gratefully received.

Andy, the constraint is what we can test! We only have the
resources to connect about 240 systems which we have done
and everything works OK so we have no reason to doubt that
400 would not work. Of course system resources may come
into play with this number of connections.

As for support, well, because we havnt tested and couldnt
get the equipment together to reproduce your customers
problems, then I am afraid we cannot support your customer

Also, we wont be raising the limit anytime soon (not on one
  PCM host anyway).

The better route would be for your customer to spread the
load across multiple PCM hosts, this would fit in with our
longer term strategy for managing more than 200 systems too.

Cheers,
Phil
