429.0. "OSF 1.3 PCM 1.1 ENS to PC running excursions fails with Urm__CW_ConvertValue: and a core dump 21923" by KERNEL::COFFEYJ (The Uk CSC Unix Girlie.) Wed Oct 12 1994 11:55

Hi,

Just a quick run past to see if this is a known problem, I didn't
recognise anything doing a directory of the conference but you never know.

I've a customer who's a bit behind on his versions, unsupported 1.3 of
OSF/1 and what I suspect is an unsupported version of PCM - 1.1

I've suggested upgrading and if this is a known problem with that version
it'll be great - all the more ammunition to say he really ought to upgrade.

If it's a known setup thing I'll hopefully still push to upgrade and
give him the fix, if neither hopefully he won't mind upgrading first
before we go any further. :-)

Problem he's seeing is as follows: (cut from his AES call)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have an Alpha workstation running OSF V1.3 and the layered product polycenter
console manager V1.1

I am using a pc running Excursion and trying to get the output to display on
it. The "console -c3" works, but I cannot get the ENS window to work.

Output from the command:-

# console -l 1.84.42.8 0 0
Warning: Urm__CW_ConvertValue: Couldn't convert identifier 'STARTUPTEXT' -
MrmNO
T_FOUND
sh: 3228 Memory fault - core dumped
#

Can you offer any advice - Please note I was a member of the field test program
and the new software was re-installed over the field software. However it did
pick up my pre-configured systems.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks in advance for any help...
(crossing fingers it's a known - fixed in the next release)

Jo,

There were LOTS of problems with V1.1, the one the customer is seeing
was one of them. They HAVE to upgrade to get this fixed, I will not
put out a patch for V1.1 when we have V1.5 released!

The customer also should install ECO1 when they have upgraded to V1.5.

Cheers,
Phil

<sigh>

I thought this was going to be a good getout, however the customers
just said he made a mistake and he's actually running CM V1.5 with
OSF/1 V1.3, and will be upgrading to 3.0 just as soon as he received
the update kit.

Any suggestions given he's now running a supported version :-(

But Jo, are they running ECO1? we fixed a number
of problems with UID files and softlinks and stuff
  in ECO1.

Cheers,
Phil

Well, that fixes the other call I have on this where the softlink
problem is cropping up :-) Actually I'd found the notes anyway...
but at least I know the patch name to sort it...

This one I'll push the customer to really do a double check as to
whether he's sure he's running V1.5 or not. Maybe if I'm trusting and
tell him to send me a copy of a setld -i :-)

thanks still..

429.5Oh good, this might well be a fix...KERNEL::COFFEYJThe Uk CSC Unix Girlie.Fri Oct 14 1994 10:443
Ok, he's not got ECO1 on the system -

Where do I get it from to send to him or should he already have it???

Jo,
the patch kits for ALL platforms are available from TIMA!! If you cannot
access them from there give me a ring, but I did get the confirmation mail from
the US saying that all the patches were loaded.

Cheers SImon....

Aha, being a unixy not vmsy sort it didn't occur to me to look there..
I'll check it out.

Well, I've tried to pick them from opg:

I can dcp across the .tar files however they show up as ascii files
thus I assume even with a -i they're getting corrupted.

I was trying to avoid tima as it's delayed enough as it is and tima
seems to take a day or so to deliver the files...

Anyone know for sure if the ones in Tima are any different to the
ones on opg since they're going to have to be copied from VMS to
Ultrix to be put onto tape......

Jo,

I think the ones in TIMA are the same, we havnt had any problems
so far with these images, are you using FTP or some other mechanism
  to copy them?

Cheers,
Phil
