385.0. "VCS versus PCM files" by BACHUS::WILLEMSG (Geert Willems MCS-Belgium) Fri Sep 02 1994 17:18

    	Hi,

I need some information on PCM V1.5.
Under VCS 1.4 we had two file every day : VCS$1994_08_08.LOG
    						  VCS$EVENT_1994_08_08.LOG
One for the console and one for the events.
At midnight a new file was created.

Can someone tell me who this is working for PCM ?
In general how do we have to manage PCM log/event/console files ?

    	Thanks in advance.

    	Rgds,

    	Geert

on PCM we do not recreate new files each day. PCM continually
writes to a set of files for log times and events. Instead we have a
mechanism for archiving off a variable amout of the oldest data for
    each system.

This is done by use of the console archive... command on OpenVMS
    or console -a on Un*x.

The system also attempts to protect itself in case of running low on
logging space by automatically archiving a fixed portion ( set up in
the config database ) of system data to the archive area.

The only thing to be aware of is that by default the logical name
pointing to the archive area is by default on the same spindle as the
default log file directory. So it is recommended that the default
archive area be set to a different volume to the logging directories.

This can be acheived by modifying the console$private_setup.com file
    to suit your site requirements.

The above info is in the User guide.

    Cheers Simon....
