The following text is submitted on behalf of a customer's request to pass along his feedback regarding his displeasure with the PCM manual. ********************************************************************** "I realize that the PCM manuals are a first cut but they are significantly worse than most manuals that come from Digital. The organization style of the Console Manager's Guide, where you try to cover three types of installation (ULTRIX, OSF, and VMS), all in one manual, confuses more than it helps. If you want to cover all installations in one book then you should have three separate but complete sections. One for ULTRIX, one for OSF, and one for VMS. This business of trying to show the same command three different ways is for the birds! I am only interested in ONE kind of installation! This means that 2/3 of what I have to plow through is garbage to me. The Console Manager's Guide should be rewritten immediately. You need a simple cookbook example of setting up a system. Then you can go back and elaborate on the various options and present reference material. A product like PCM is supposed to save me work not cause it." **************************************************************************** Nancy Schenk Colorado Springs, CSC

Nancy, I am sorry your customer feels this way, this is the only negative feedback we have had about the style of the documentation and I am afraid it isnt going to change until we get A LOT more feedback of this nature. We were actually pleased with the manual the way it is, we thought it was the most efficient way of presenting the material as I would guess 90% of the information is common to all the operating systems we support. We also thought we were doing the right thing for the environment in not producing 3 different manuals (thats what your customer is effectively asking us to do). Think of all those trees we have saved! Does anybody else reading this conference have any feedback to support this customer? Cheers, Phil | |||||

I'm sorry I totally disagree, I found the documentation clear and precise. There isn't the requirement for the separation for each platform, as its only the installation and character cell interface that needs clarification, and as CM can be managed from a standard MOTIF interface accross all systems! - whats is the PROBLEM?! totally satisfied, Stewart Piesley @HHL |
