335.0. "Ctrl-d from CONSOLE CONNECT hangs interface" by CX3PST::ANASAZ::J_BECKER (There's no substitute for a good boot) Fri Aug 05 1994 20:15

I have a customer experiencing problems with ULTRIX system connected to
PCM. When he enters single user mode (CTRL-D) from the CONSOLE CONNECT
interface, he experiences some type of "LAT transistion" (he was
unclear what happens) and he can't see any data in the window after
this point. If he does a CONSOLE SHUDOWN and a restart, he can again
connect to the system again. If a SET HOST/DTE is performed to the lat
device, it does work. Sound familiar to anyone? I assume this should
work but I am not very familiar with ULTRIX. Does it send some sort of
character sequence that can hang CONSOLE CONNECT?

John,
we certainly should not be sending anything which hangs the port. We only
interprete the 4 defined control keys for the particular session(escape exit
break and refresh). If any of these are pressed the relevant action should
take place i.e. Drop connect and go to monitor, exit to shell, send a break to
the managed system or refresh the screen in monitor.

I have an ULTRIX PCM system running V4.3a and PCM V1.5.

I can ^D a session with no problems both on a LAT and a TELNET type connection.

Get a copy of the database for us to have a gander at.

Cheers Simon.....
335.2more info what is status 5808?29635::ANASAZ::J_BECKERThere's no substitute for a good bootTue Aug 09 1994 00:3132

I have been given some more info from the customer:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a CTRL/D kills the connection I can do a CONSOLE
SHUDOWN and a restart and then it's possible to connect to
that system again. I can SET HOST/DTE LTAnnn and connect to
the affected system that PCM won't allow access to. When I
use a vt console, the login: prompt comes backup as it
         should.

The consolemanager.log file had a lot of the following:

Console link for system CLARK lost - Unrecognised system error code: 5808
Console link for system PIPER lost - Unrecognised system error code: 5808
Console link for system KIRA lost - Unrecognised system error code: 5808
Console link for system KIRA lost - Unrecognised system error code: 5808
Console link for system LEWIS lost - Unrecognised system error code: 5808
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

At this point, I do not know which system is the ultrix system. What
does 5808 status mean? I could not find it or the hex equivelant
(16b0) in any message file.

thanks

335.3I have the databaseCX3PST::ANASAZ::J_BECKERThere's no substitute for a good bootWed Aug 24 1994 19:3217
I finally received the database port file. It is big (200 blocks) and I dont
want to post here unless necessary. I could not find anything
unusual about the nodes. I still do not know what the 5808 message
means. Any ideas? Also when the user enters the ^D, he captured a
message:

A message appears below the Command: prompt in the monitor window:
Connection between line sensor and remote console has been lost.

If he leaves PCM up and creates a new lat port he can connect to it.
If he restarts PCM, the connection recovers.

Any ideas?

So is the PCM engine a VMS platform or is it an Ultrix/OSF platform?
I'm assuming that it's a VMS platofrm due to the SET HOST/DTE command.
However, those error messages in the daemon log look for U-word like.
Ctrl-d is the U-words EOF character and I suppose it could cause the
link to terminate if it interpreted it as an EOF locally. This would
only apply on an Ultrix or OSF PCM engine though.

If it is a VMS platform then what happens if you enter ctrl-d
    from a SET HOST/DTE LTAxxxx: ?
