302.0. "distance limitations with PCM?" by BSS::JSALE () Wed Jul 13 1994 01:12

                        -< PCM limitations? >-

Are there any distance limitations with PCM? Would one be able
to remotely manage consoles say from Calif. to Maylasia (spl?) using
PCM. I would guess TELNET or Modems would be required.

Could PCM be used to remotely manage consoles from Calif. to Texas
     or New York?

How about DECAlert? Will it work with PCM?

Jeff,
No there are not limitations on distance. Providing that your network is
reasonable ( i.e. latency between each end is not extreme) we will work fine.
We have demonstrated a TELNET session on a terminal server running in Reading
in the UK connected to a PCM system in Marlboro Mass USA.

I do not know the answer to the DECalert question. We have done no specific
work to integrate with DECAlert, I think you need to ask this of the DECAleret
group themselves.

Cheers SImon...

The problem is DECAlert has been sold to a 3rd party I believe. But I
think I can answer your question Jeff. DECAlert provided some command
procedures that were basically VCS ENS Action routines. It really
shouldn't take too much work to get PCM ENS to fire the DECAlert action
    procedures.

DECAlert has become TARGET-->Alert, sold and supported by
Target Systems of Marlboro, Mass. I don't have my POLYCENTER
Solutions Guide handy, but it's in there. Or, you can contact
Rich (ZEKE::) Pietravalle, one of the PCM product managers who has
also been involved in the TARGET-->Alert efforts.

You can get PCM to generate a RUDEM call (which is a simple
DCL level command) and specify the key (which identifies the
user and associated dial info) and the sbm (severity bit mask)
which identifies the types of notification to generate.
