295.0. "Management of 2100 AXP?" by EZLCHZ::EZZELL (Mike Ezzell) Wed Jul 06 1994 23:52

I just want to verify that Polycenter Console Manager can manage
a 2100 AXP system. The SPD doesn't include AXP systems in the list
of devices which can be managed. I am assuming that one of the
serial ports on the 2100 can be used for the console. I understand
that the EISA and RAID configuration utilities require VGA, but that
shouldn't be necessary for normal console management.

I can verify that I have had PCM both running on and
	managing a 2100 server running OSF/1 v2.0b.

Thanks for the confirmation. I am a little skidish these days.

Bear in mond this will be operating system dependent. I don't think it
will work if your running Windows NT. I'll try and verify this though.

We dont official support managing any specific systems
in the SPD! The systems listed in the SPD are for PCM
  host platforms.

If the 2100 conforms to the basic connectivity rules
specified in the SPD (RS232, XON/XOFF/ buffered etc) the
PCM will be able to manage it.

Cheers,
Phil

Just to confirm: PCM can manage a 2100 AXP running OpenVMS???

As far as I know, a 2100 server doesn't have a console port. If that is
the case, then it can plug into a comms port, which has OPCOM turned
on, but you wont be able to boot the machine. You might want to check
on the existence of a console port

295.8Are you sure of that Martin??OPG::SIMONThu Oct 06 1994 11:217
Martin,
I am fairly sure the 2100 does have a console port. I seem to remember
looking at one of the first ones over here and that it could be set such that
either a VGA scenn or Async port could be a console. However, I would welcome a
definitive answer from someone who has got one.

Cheers Simon...

All,

I have configured a DEC 2100 server (sable) as a serviced system into
Console Manager as a LAT connection. It is simply a mater of telling
the console firmware (on the sable) not to be graphical output. It is
all detailed in the 2100 installation guide.

re .8, .9, I took that as a YES, and told the customer to go for it.

295.11The issue is the operating system software, not the hardwareSTEVMS::PETTENGILLmulpTue Jan 03 1995 23:356
VMS and DEC OSF can be supported via PCM, but Windows NT can not. So, the
2100 running VMS and OSF can be supported when configured as a server, but the
2100 running Windows NT requires the use of a different hardware/software
package that replaces the VGA card with one that communicates to the
console manager and sends the bitmap changes and keyboard keycodes back and
forth to a software package that runs on a Windows NT system.
