291.0. "Upgrading from VAX/VCS to OSF/PCM licences" by BAHTAT::SCATTERGOOD (Graham Scattergood) Thu Jun 30 1994 00:40

My customer has a VAX with 20 concurrent licences for VCS.

He is upgrading to Alpha OSF/1 and PCM.

Can the VCS licences be used on OSF/1?

If not, is there a special programme to get the new licences as a trade-up?

Would this be any different if he moved to Alpha with VMS?

Thanks.

I believe the status is :-

VCS to PCM on VAX, no problem
VCS to PCM on AXP, there is a trade-in program for VAX license to AXP licenses at no cost

There are no trade-in programs for VMS to OSF/1

291.2We should allow OSF/1 Alpha on same basis as VMSBAHTAT::SCATTERGOODGraham ScattergoodFri Jul 01 1994 14:525
It would seem that we should encourage our customers to use Alpha AXP and
really let them choose the operating system. My vote would be to allow an
operating system move to OSF/1, if the customer has a UNIX strategy. By making
them pay again or forcing them towards staying with VMS is contrary to our
company strategy and industry trends.
291.3Check with product mgt.OPG::SIMONFri Jul 01 1994 15:3721
Hi,
    when we engineered this version we were told to accept VCS licenses on the
OpenVMS platforms. So if you are on OpenVMS regardless of platform the licenses
from VCS system(s) installed on the PCm platform will work as our LMF calls
will recognise them.

We were told expressly NOT to do the same for ULTRIX and OSF/1.

There have been several incewntive programs for getting customers to move from
VAX to AXP where if the customer buys the hardware the software is thrown in.

This was not a PCM specific deal. In this case the customer should be able to
trade VCS licenses for the equivilent number of PCM connections. This is done
by taking back the VCS licenses and issuing a PCM license with 0 cost.

I do not know whether this deal is still on or how you go about doing it).

If you have any further questions/comments about the costing please address them
to Rae Kung ( MUZICK::KUNG).

Cheers Simon....

291.6VCS unlimited user PAK works for PCM why ?SEDOAS::CLIFFE_STue Jan 03 1995 17:0412
    re -2

    	My customer has migrated from VCS VAX to PCM VAX, and has an
    VCS unlimited licence, which now appears to give him unlimited connects
    on PCM, although looking at the migration plan, the unlimited VCS
    licence should not work.
    	Will future versions of PCM prevent this PAK from working, as
    the fact that it works means you effectively get 168 connects free.

Steve,

  Your customer should in fact only get 32 connects, this is a bug in the
  way our LMF checking works, it will get fixed in a future release, so your
  customer shouldnt be surprised if when they upgrade to a release where this
  is fixed they will only be able to connect 32 systems.

Cheers,
Phil

291.8How do I go about swapping the PAK's ?SEDOAS::CLIFFE_SWed Jan 04 1995 14:1712

    	If the previous comment is true WHY in the upgrade plan in -2 do
    yo have to trade your unlimited licence in and recieve 32 individual
    licences. I have been trying to delve within DEC as to how this plan
    can be put into practice, as the contract administrator for the account
    does not know how this pak is supposed to be transferrred into 32
    individual licenses.

    				Yours hopefully

Steve,

  I suggest you contact Rae the product manager for clarification about what
  she wrote in -3. All I know is that it was never intended for an unlimited
  VCS customer to get unlimited PCM usage.

  As for transferring the PAK, can't the product administrator just issue 32
  single use PCM licences in exchange for the VCS licence? Or maybe if they
  have access to PAKGEN, then a single licence with 3200 units would suffice.

Cheers,
Phil

291.10updated VCS->PCM migration detailsMUZICK::KUNGFri Feb 10 1995 21:1551
    Please disregard reply -.4, this is an updated document describing
    the VCS to PCM license migration plan as they stand, with recent
    changes dictated by the Digital SBP (Swe Bus Prac) team. Key
    difference is that VCS customers who purchased the hardware package
    which included a VCS unlimited license, with service warranty, can
    use PCM in the capacity/unlimited fashion at no additional cost.
