272.0. "Multiple console connections" by GYPSC::WIENER (Adrian Wiener-SD&E/SIC-UFC/GY) Tue May 31 1994 16:12

Is it possible to use more than one host to manage a group of OSF/1 systems ?

I'm thinking of catching the console messages of the same machines on 2 different
stations and search on each of them for different strings...

This could be useful for selectively managing a large number of systems which
generate a large number of console messages.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance,

272.1Not really, but Why??OPG::SIMONWed Jun 01 1994 11:3924
Adrian,
       not really sure why you want to do this.

If you think that the machine you are using cannot cope with the load cut
down the number of connections on each machine rather than having two
connections to a single one.

The problems I can see is the RS232 connection would have to split to two
terminal servers. Probably will work, but maty get noise.

Twice as many servers needed.

Twice as many PCM licenses ( i.e. two for each managed system).

Write access is only synchronised on a single system so both connections could
try to type at the same time.

Only advantage I can see is two access point to the same console ( but with the
above caveat).

As we are looking at what we could do in the future what sort of thing would you
like to see??

Cheers Simon...
