266.0. "EXTRACT Problem..." by TNKSYS::DBROWN (With magic, you have some control) Tue May 24 1994 19:32

    I have a question from my customer concerning a problem with PCM
    EXTRACT and information logged to the console. Here is his message to me:

================================================================================

A question concerning PCM EXTRACT and console logging:

Does PCM handle output to the console the same as VCS? If so, I have a minor
technicality.

The systems connected to PCM do not log much data. "CONSOLE EXTRACT name/SIN"
sometimes yields "No log data since specified time" for days of history, or a
dump as in:

DPS248>console extract gwsna1/sin=17-may-1994
%SYSTEM-F-ACCVIO, access violation, reason mask=01, virtual address=FF03A7F3, PC
=00071486, PSL=03C00008

  Improperly handled condition, image exit forced.

No log data since specified time

Should PCM not log everything output to the console?

As a test, I set host to a serviced system and entered

	reply/bell/term=opa0: "test test"

The system said OPA0 was notified. There was nothing in extract or
the log file to indicate the test went through. I did the same thing on a
system connected to VCS and there was an entry logged to the console. (vcs
review).

If the logfiles are corrupted, would deleting them, stoping/restarting PCM
correct the problem?

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks...

Well,

  What version of extract is your customer using? From your output,
  it would seem that its quite an old version as you should be
  getting a header to tell you which version it is, something like
  this:

$ console extract bbunny/since="12:38"/time

  I presume this system has logging "enabled".

  I have just fixed some problems with extract, however, would it be
  possible for me to get copies of the .TIMES, .LOG and .EVENT file
  for the system "gwsna1" I could then take a look at them with my
  "fixed" extract routine.

  Also, do you get any output in the MONITOR window for the system as
  you generate the data?

  Are you doing this from a privileged account or not, if not, have your
  logfiles got world read set on them?

Cheers,
Phil
266.2Can't Find Version...TNKSYS::DBROWNWith magic, you have some controlTue May 24 1994 20:065
    I could not get a banner to distinguish the version of EXTRACT.

    I will ask the customer to supply the files you require.

>> I could not get a banner to distinguish the version of EXTRACT.

  Who is your customer, are they a FT Site? As only the FT versions
  of the product had no banner, the final V1.1 release has a banner.

  No problem, its in my interest to get this fixed asap too.

266.4I'm seeing a hang with v1.530188::CLEMENCEMon Aug 14 1995 09:5937
I'm seeing these extract failures also with V1.5-000. I'm also seeing the
extract command hang from time to time. (it expends cpu time, but no i/o
activity).

    Re -1.

     At the minimum you need to apply the mandatory update for V1.5 which
    is on the OpenVMS condist. At best, you would want to upgrade to V1.6
    and this is my recomendation.

    Regards,
