258.0. "PCM, AS400s and TELNET" by POBOX::CHGV04::KREMER () Tue May 10 1994 16:38

I am working with a customer that would like to monitor their VAXs, AXPs,
RS/6000s, and AS400s using PCM. They are running TCP/IP on the AS400. We would
like to trap the operator messages from the AS400 through PCM. Has anyone tried
this before? Should this work with a Telnet connection? If so, what would be
steps for this.

Thanks in advance.

You need a black box to convert the AS/400 twinax using EBCDIC to RS232
ASCII. There is one on the market that does this. I forget it's name.

If you want, try contacting Craig Saint-Amour in New York (Chemical
Bank - his account have one). Or you could look through this, or the
    VCS, conference with DIR/TIT=400

You seem to have misunderstood the TELNET connectivity here, and how
    console manager works.

The TELNET connectivity is meant for connection to terminal servers.
The console cable then comes from the system, and plugs into the
terminal server (thus the requirement for a black box).

RS/6000, VAXen, and AXP's are not a problem.

We have remote system management deal where customer wanted us
to monitor events from AS400 (only SNA and Token-ring).
(other systema are HP9000 and Netware servers)
They have Perle's twinax->RS232 box. Now we have one RS232 port defined
as a printer to AS400 and other one
is for logging in. Perle seems to emulate all fuction keys of
IBM terminal. For example REFRESH is <esc><esc>u.

Customer made a AS400 job which reads with 5 minutes interval
new messages from AS400 operator message queue and prints them
to printer queue (in PERLE). We have PCM events for critical
AS400 events and we also check that AS400 is sending the logfile
    in every 5 minutes.
