214.0. "Cable Pin-outs?" by COPHUB::NEWVAX::BCASTRO (Robert M. Castro 339-5383) Wed Mar 16 1994 14:57

    I have a customer asking for the pin-outs for the interface cables
    required for configuring the VAXcluster Console. This information is
    not in the documentation I have. The customer wishes to make up his
    own cables so needs the information. Any suggestions where this
    information is available? It would be nice if it is in a file
    available from the EASYNET.

    The terminal server ports are all RS232. We don't have the pinout
    descriptions here, but the info should be readily available in lots of
    places. You could even try the terminal server group/notes file.

214.2Need minimum signals requiredCOPHUB::NEWVAX::BCASTRORobert M. Castro 339-5383Fri Mar 18 1994 18:197

    I believe the customer needs the pin-outs to know what minimum signals
    are needed for the Console Manager: data leads only, limited modem
    control, full modem control, etc. If he needs all the pins okay but if
    he just needs the data leads that is a difference of 4 pins versus 25;
    significant in time, labor, and materials. Can you tell me the minimum
    signals required?
214.3It's a h/w questionZENDIA::DBIGELOWInnovate, Integrate, EvaporateFri Mar 18 1994 21:0013
    Bob,

        This is more of a hardware question and should be asked in the
    appropriate notes file. If your customer is going to hook up directly
    to a cpu, then it depends upon which type of serial port he is trying
    to connect to. THe same goes for a terminal server. Try asking the
    question in the terminal server notes file. Console Manager software
    doesn't get involved with the 'minimum signal requirements'.

    Exactly what type of console are they trying to connect to? Is there
    any reason why they can't use off the shelf cables?

214.4I found it (I think).COPHUB::NEWVAX::BCASTRORobert M. Castro 339-5383Mon Mar 28 1994 20:3517

    I have not made an on-site visit yet but do not know of any reason that
    the customer could not use vendor supplied cables. I believe the
    customer feels that making up their own cables would be cheaper. He
    also feels more comfortable adapting his cabling to his specific
    requirements. It remains to be seen whether he will purchase or make
    the cables.

    I have found an excellent Digital document for deriving the pin-outs:
    OPEN DECconnect Applications Guide; Fall, 1993; EC-G2570-42.

    It is a hardware question but one I think should be addressed in the
    requirements section of the installation quide or at least in an
    appendix. At least to the extent of providing the used pins from the
    monitored system to the console monitor.

    Thanks for your assistance.
