We have a customer who has been quoted a DEC 3000-300 AXP to be their "VCS" console for a CI cluster and some other systems by their VAR. My understanding is that VCS is not being ported to Alpha so this will not work. However, they could use PCM. The customer requires the workstation to run OpenVMS, so they have to wait 'til June for V1.1. First - is the above correct ?? Second - if they need VCS functionality on a VMS system by the end of March, is their only choice to order a VAXstation and VCS ?? Thanks Arlan

206.2 | Is this a Budget requiremnent?? | OPG::SIMON | Thu Mar 10 1994 10:14 | 13
Is the end of March because of Financail Year end and budget deadlines, or for a technical reason? If it is the former then you may be able to be creative with your customer ( order now for delivery later). Bear in mind that at some time in the future the customer will need to migrate to PCM as VCS will be retired and PCM is the upgrade path!! Will it be better to go through the implimentation once rather than impliment VCS and then go through the migration. Cheers simon....
206.3 | technical reasons... | TOOHOT::LEEDS | From VAXinated to Alphaholic | Thu Mar 10 1994 14:59 | 12 |
Unfortunatly - it's a technical reason - they're adding some remote systems and they wanted to manage those via VCS by tying the console ports into the network. Their MIS group is here in Phoneix, but one system will be in Texas and one in Ohio with no local system management in either site. Their intention was to replace the 3 consoles they currently have on their CI cluster with VCS and add the two consoles for the remote sites. These other two systems will arrive this month. Thanks for the input. Arlan |
