194.0. "VCS to PCM on OpenVMS VAX, what to do for migration?" by STRWRS::KOCH_P (It never hurts to ask...) Tue Feb 22 1994 19:03

I have a customer who owns licenses for VCS. They have NOT installed
this product. I recommended that they wait for PCM to become available,
however, they want to know what is required to upgrade from VCS to PCM
    if they can't wait.

Are there tools which will convert all the associated database file
from VCS format to PCM format under OpenVMS VAX?

    Thanks for your help...

Your customer needs nothing. PCM will honor VCS licenses, so there
will be no cost to them.

This is your customer, but personally, it it were me, I'd advise
them to start using VCS now. The concept is of both products are
closely related along with the look and feel. By doing this, your
customer can do all the up front leg work of getting the console
cabling completed. There is a conversion utility which will take a lot
of the grunt work out of the migration. One other consideration is that
the event definitions probabilty won't be included with PCM. However,
if they have VCS installed, they will be migrated into the new
    database.

But then again, this is your customer and it's your shot. If they wait,
it won't be the end of the world.

Well, they want to move now. So, the question is what is the work
required to move from VCS to PCM?

Why doesn't PCM have any pre-defined event filters?

Would anyone in PCM engineering be willing to talk to my customer about
the effort required to do the migration?

Mostly learning. They will have to learn VCS and then PCM. As I stated
earlier, learning VCS will foster their learning of PCM. Your customer
doesn't necessarily have to understand all the complexities of using
VCS, just the basic connectivity should do quite nicely.

The event filters are are bear for us to maintain. We are trying to
change the way we do business around here and trying to make the
specific product developers provide the event definitions.
The objective is for our customers to get the latest and fullest set of
event definitions. This is a rather large and touchey issue for us at
    the moment.

If you like, you can arrange for a conference call with me. I don't
mind and I starting to get used to it. Give me a buzz if you'd like to
go over this in any further detail.
