178.0. "PCM/OSF generating defunct processes" by CERN::BOTHNER (Tor Bothner (CERN account consultant)) Fri Jan 28 1994 15:35

We have a problem with PCM on OSF generating zombie processes.

After a while the output from ps is like this:

root       495   407  0.0 -        co    0:00.00
<defunct>
root       496   407  0.0 -        co    0:00.00
<defunct>
root       497   407  0.0 -        co    0:00.00
<defunct>
....
...
..
.

Basically the machine is filling up with zombie processes. When it is full, the
machine hangs for 30 minutes and is unusable.

This is probably due to the port from Ultrix: On OSF, when a process exists, it
will hang around until its parent does a wait() on it. This is not the casse for
Ultrix.

This is preventing us from doing any further testing.

Platform: 3000/400, 64MB, OSF 1.3
