159.0. "Newbie questions" by AXEL::FOLEY (Rebel without a Clue) Thu Jan 13 1994 20:27

	I have some questions about PCM for OpenVMS VAX (and probably
	AXP at some point) I'd love to hunt down the answers to these
	questions but I'm stretched as it is.

	I currently have upwards of 4-5 VCS systems connected to 40
	or so systems. I'd LOVE to have just ONE system running PCM.
	This doesn't sound like a problem. Is PCM alot more efficient
	than VCS? Would a VAXstation 4000 VLC seem like a good system
	to run this on? The majority of the connect would be set hosts
	into the VS4000. I doubt many would use a DECwindows interface.
	Should I load this system up with memory? Currently my VCS
	systems are not the most reliable. I'd like to change that.

	What kind of failover is there today? Can I set up a hot system
	that will take over should the main system go down?

	I'll be copying the kits as soon as they are available.

		thanks,

Mike,

  The bottlenecks on OpenVMS are memory and disk, so as long as
  you have plenty of both, you should be OK. We havnt done too
  much testing on different VAX systems yet, although we have
  had 180 systems running on a VAXstation 4000 model 60 (in this
  case performance was not too great as we were logging to one
  spindle).

  As for failover, you get none in the product for V1.1 (its on
  the list for V1.2) however, if you set up your DECservers so
  they queue connects, then you should be able to set up a similar
  arrangement to the failover on VCS.

  I hope this helps

Cheers,
Phil

    Mike,

       You might also want to think about contacting Val Emond in MRO.
    He's done away with 8 VCS systems and now has one PCM system
    which is on an Ultrix platform, managing somewhee in the vacinity of
    90-100 systems. He also has a hot standby system.
    His email address is vlnvax::emond.
