135.0. "OSF CM T1.1 unusable due to hang problem" by HERON::LAFORGUE (It works better if you plug it!) Thu Nov 18 1993 17:45

    I'm still having hang problem with CM T1.1 for OSF.
    on unidad , DEC 4000 running OSF/1 and CM T1.1:
    unidad% console -c deion     (deion is also a DEC4000 running OSF V1.3)
    on deion console I run the following csh commands:
    while (1)
    ? date
    ? sleep 30
    ? end
    so I get a message every 30 seconds and I can see at what time I lose
    the connection.
    I takes between 5 and 9 minutes to loose the connection.
    then I get the prompt
    unidad% (the CM machine),
    but I cannot type anything, the console process is dead, and I have
    to kill the csh process.

    I tried to start console -c on two different windows and they died
    within the same 30 seconds. So it looks like it is due to the same
    "event" but what?

    I can accept to loose the connection after not using the terminal for
    7 minutes (some systems are setup like that), but needing to kill the
    csh process from another session makes console manager unusable.

    Any hope to get it fixed quickly? (at least the stuck csh).

    /Bernard

135.1worse than that, stopped to use it.HERON::LAFORGUEIt works better if you plug it!Fri Nov 19 1993 07:167
    It's worse than I thought.
    I lost the connection even when I was typing on the console.
    It's so bad, that I stopped to use it for the systems I really need.
    I keep it running for two systems, in case you want me to test
    something, but I look forward for a reliable version.

135.2OPG::PHILIPAnd through the square window...Fri Nov 19 1993 09:5412
Bernard,

  We think we know what the problem is and have a workaround in the code
  until we can pin down the problem for real.

  Anyway, we will have an update to the IFT kit today sometime, if you
  could try it and let us know how you get on.

  We will announce the kit in the the appropriate note when it is ready.

Cheers,
Phil
135.3Don't have the problem at BrusselsKETJE::SYBERTZMarc Sybertz@BRO - 856/7572Fri Nov 19 1993 11:5314
I don't have the hang problem.

After calling Bernard to exactly know his problem symptoms, I tried here and
didn't encountered his problem ...

But remeber I'm still running the version I got one month ago.

Marc.

135.4tried the 19 nov kit, no progressHERON::LAFORGUEIt works better if you plug it!Mon Nov 22 1993 17:1516
    Maybe I was not patient enough.
    After the reply .2 I looked at elbrig.reo and found a kit dated 19-nov.
    I copied it, installed it after setld -d the previous one.
    To be sure to not keep any old thing, before installing, I renamed
    the /var/opt/console directory and the /usr/opt/DCR110 directory.

    After setting up everything, I'm still at the same point:
    still having terminal blocking hangs after about 7 minutes.

    Simon, do you want an account on my system to see the problem?
    If yes, send me a mail, to uniriv::laforgue.

    I'd reallly like to see it working. On Alpha Osf, before it hangs, the
    performances are excellent, vi works fine, without arrow key problems.

135.5vi through CM .... > log fileKETJE::SYBERTZMarc Sybertz@BRO - 856/7572Wed Nov 24 1993 13:0714

Bernard,

Don't forget that with CM you are able to log all the data of the console into a
file ... so keep always in mind that you beter use a rlogin to vi big files and
use vi through CM only in the case you don't have any network.

Just an advice,
Marc.

PS: I'm copying the kit now and will try the 7 minutes hang you have as soon as
I can.

Marc,
     we have reproduced the problem and are looking in to it. Stick with what
you have for the moment.

Cheers Simon......
