108.0. "question about TELNET" by HTSC19::DENISLI () Fri Nov 05 1993 08:38

    I am not familiar with POLYCENTER Console Manager and have no manual
    on hand. Below is a question from a customer,

      +-----------+
      |           +--------------+       RS232
      |	uVAX 3100 | console port +----------------+
      |           +--------------+                |
      +-----------+                               |
                                              +---+------------+
                                              | DECserver 90TL |
                                              +-------+--------+
                                                      |
                                        ---+----------+------------------
                                           |              Ethernet
                                    +------+-----+
                                    | DECstation |
                                    +------------+

    The POLYCENTER Console Manager is run on the DECstation. There is no
    problem to control the uVAX 3100 with the LAT protocol. The customer
    wants to know if it is possible to control the uVAX with TELNET in
    this configuration.

    Yes it is. One of the areas of functionality in Console Manager, not in
    VCS, is the ability to use Telnet.

108.2Halting in this config.OPG::SIMONFri Nov 05 1993 10:239
Hi,

Just a word of warning on this. There is no problem using TELNET or LAT in this
configuration as it is on a LAN. If your Microvax requires a "BreaK" signal to
halt it the DECserver 90TL does not support sending a TELNET Break unless you
are using the NAS software in the DECserver rather that the normal loadhost
software. The TELNET break functionality was not added until NAS V1.0.

Cheers Simon......
108.3What is NAS software?HTSC19::DENISLIMon Nov 08 1993 03:0312

    Do you mean that only those ROM-based DECserver software (e.g. 90L+)
    are written by NAS while those downline-loaded (e.g. 90TL) are not?

    Thanks and regards,
    Denis
108.4NAS version is also downlineloadedEEMELI::KORKKOGeneral nuisance...Mon Nov 08 1993 07:197
        The NAS software is also downlineloaded to server. I think the
        NAS based software for 90TL is WWENG2.SYS whilst the standard
        software is WWENG1.SYS.

        Same type of situation exists also DECserver 700.

    If I've got the PCM running at site A and want to manage another system
    in Site B where the two systems are separated by a router, will the
    telnet feature allow my to perform all PCM functions as though the
    system was part of a LAN?

    Thanks,

 Yes, if you are running TCPIP between your two sites.
