99.0. "Sun/HP/IBM connection with CM1.1 on OSF/1" by KETJE::SYBERTZ (Marc Sybertz@BRO - 856/7572) Fri Oct 08 1993 18:45

Hi,

I'm not familiar with lat, terminal cables, HP/IBM/Sun console ports, ...

However, I had to find out how to solve this kind of problem for the Belgian
uniforum.

Now that it works, I would like to share with you what I found. (btw, it's a
also a good way for me to retrieve the info when I will need it in the future ;-)

The HP in my environment is the only machine which succeed to redirect the
console to a serial port and also started its graphical user interface on the
graphical screen. At this time, I've still problem with the SUN. (IBM had no
graphical screen).

I suggest CM engineering to keep trace of all the infos we can have about these
problems and to create a little un-official internal document that can be used
afterwards.

Hope the following will help,
Marc.

**** Hardware + Soft

DEC OSF/1 3000/500	OSF/1 V1.3	Console Manager FT 1.1

HP 9000/715		HP-UX A.09.01	(With graphical screen)
IBM RS6000 AIX V3 R2	(Without graphical screen)
SUN IPX SunOS V4.1.3	(With Graphical screen)

DECserver 90M

**** Cables :

From TS90M	BN24H03X (Digital)

HP	BN24H03X <> HB8575-B (Digital : 9 female)
		    (**** I had to use a crossed exchanger, so that it's
			  beter to use the HB8575-? which should be crossed)

IBM	BN24H03X <> H8571-A (Digital : 32 pins female)
	H8571-A  <> 00G0943 (IBM : 32 male <> 10 female)

Sun	BN24H03X <> H8571-E (Digital : 32 pins female)
	H8571-E	 <> 530-1662-01 REV 56 (Sun : 32 female <> 8 male)

Vt340	BN24H03X is enough

**** Soft changes

HP :	- Rlogin on the hp and change the /etc/gettydefs file so that the
	  '9600' entry equals the console one. (otherwise, CM will not be able
	  to read/trap console messages).

	- At the boot system management prompt, enter the following :

	  path console rs232_a.9600.8.none

	  then power off the machine and restart

IBM :	- Nothing to do because in my case it was a VT console

Sun :	- We succeed to put the console on the serial line but failed to start
	  an openwin session on the graphical screen !

	- To put a console on the serial line without use of graphical screen,
	  do ;

		# eeprom output_device=ttya
		# eeprom input_device=ttya
		# eeprom ttya_mode=9600,8,n,1

		power off the machine and reboot

	 (We tried also to put a symbolic link between /dev/console to /dev/ttya
	  but if failed)

	I will try to meet my ex-colleagues of Sun during the fair and arrange
	this problem.

**** On the terminal server

All the ports have been put with :

	Access : remote
	Character size : 8
	Parity : none

99.1Many Thanks.OPG::SIMONMon Oct 11 1993 10:037
Marc,
      many thanks for this information. We shall ceertainly try to keep a
repositry of such information as one of our greatest problems is understanding
the specific requirements of other system platforms with CM. Keep up the good
work.

Cheers Simon.....
99.2Sun : not possible ?KETJE::SYBERTZMarc Sybertz@BRO - 856/7572Mon Oct 18 1993 15:028
After discussing with some SUN engineers, it seems not to be possible to
redirect the console to a ttya while continuing to work with the graphical
display ...

I will post the question in the internet news sun conference and hope I will
receive an official answer soon. Will let you know.

Marc.
