94.0. "Manageable Platforms/Interfaces" by BELMNT::BEAZLEY () Thu Sep 09 1993 19:08

  Hi,

I have a customer who would like a list of supported
platforms and interfaces. For instance, connector
  types and vendor platforms.

  Also...

Can CM manage raw Telnet and or LAT (without T/S)?
Can CM console manage PC's (ie. File servers)?
Are other Protocols being considered (IPX, VIP, NETbeui)?

Is there any plan to build an successor to DECalert?
    If not..then..
What notification product(s) would Digital recommend?

Would anyone like to come and speak at a multi-customer
seminar in New York City and address direction and
MIS/Network management products? I can be reached at
   DTN: 352-2195.

We have several interested customers but, they want
the straight goop. They feel that Digital is waffling
on Polycenter products. Quite frankly, we in the field
are mushrooms (in the dark) as well.

Please consider answering part or all of this note. All
  replies will be greatly appreciated.

         Regards,
          Bob

    Bob,

Currently, CM only runs on MIPS Ultrix workstations. The next release
will run on OpenVMS/ALpha/VAX, MIPS Ultrix, and VAX Open VMS. (I.E.
    everything except for VAX Ultrix).
As for interfaces, I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but can guess.
It will use Direct connection, LAT, and Telnet. It also has an Xwindow/
Motif interface. By vendor platforms, do you mean which systems CM
can manage? If so, just about any if they use ASCII data, support
Xon/Xoff and have a buffered port. There are sometimes little caveats
that must be over come for full functionality. If you'd like to know
more on 3rd party systems, you could scan through the VCS notes file
and look for key words like Prome, DG, IBM , etc.

> Can CM manage raw Telnet and or LAT (without T/S)?

No, it must be done via a terminal server.

> Can CM console manage PC's (ie. File servers)?

Yes, For long as the PC supprts the criteria listed above. Don't
forget, it must have a console port, which most PC's don't have.
I personally haven't heard of any PC's that do have a console.

> Are other Protocols being considered (IPX, VIP, NETbeui)?

    No, not a the present.

Can't answer that one for you. I'd suggest that you deal with that
group directly. You could also look in the POLYCENTER notes file.

> What notification product(s) would Digital recommend?

CM has a series of notification routines built in. These are a series
of Window notifications and mail. I've talked with several customers
who have gotten beepers to work with just a small amount of effort.

You should be talking with the various product managers. Here's 2 for
    CM:

       Anne BLUMON::DINEEN
       Barbara BLUMON::SAUNDERS

This is an unfortunate situation. I've been as truthful as I can and
tried not to waffle. This is something that you should bring to the
attention of the upper level management. You could try geting in
contact with Bill Keyworth. I think he's in charge of POLYCENTER
marketing. Unless you bring this to their attention, they won't know
    about it.

    Hope this helps,

I agree ...

But you have to know that you have in your hands at least 2 wonderfull products
to enter TODAY any multi-vendor shops : Console Manager and DECnsr.

I had the opportunity to see the earlier FT of Console Manager running at DECUS
Europe. It was magic ! I mean that ALL customers are interested in such a
product, whatever OS they are running.

DECnsr supports TODAY the major unix implementations and will be available as
server on AXP OSF/1 by the end of this CY. It supports also backup of DOS PCs.

You should present at least the 2 above products and make a demonstration of it.
By doing so, I ensure you that people will be interested to what Digital offer
today. Of course DECnsr is more Unix oriented but it is one of the major player
in a multi-environment, isn't ? and a OpenVMS server version will be available
also by the end of this CY.

Don't be mushrooms ... Don't present the marketing polycenter message. Just
enter and generate the interests with the above 2 products and you will win.

Marc.
