Subject: POLYCENTER Console Manager V1.1 Field Test Site Nominations
The POLYCENTER Console Manager (PCM) V1.1 has been rescheduled to start in
November 1993. Therefore, I am sending this notice in case customers or
internal organizations may be available to participate in this time frame,
but we not available in August, when the field test was originally planned
to start.
We are still accepting nominations for both internal and external customer
field test sites. If your organization is interested or if you have a
customer that is interested in participating in this field test, please
complete and return the attached nomination form and field test
questionnaire to VINO::DONAHUE. Your nomination will be placed on the field
test interest list.
If you have already sent information, nominating your oranization, or a
customer, rest assured, you are still on the list of potential field test
sites and I will be contacting you in the near future with more details.
POLYCENTER Console Manager is a Software Product which when coupled with the
appropriate hardware systems provides a central point for the coordination of
system console services and the logging of console data received from a service
system. In addition Console Manager logs and displays events that are detected
by the console line controllers and will provide a mechanism to notify users and
operations staff of those events.
It is a goal of POLYCENTER Console Manager Version 1.1 to provide all the
relevant functionality from the VCS V1.4 and POLYCENTER Console Manager V1.0
products. In addition to this, the V1.1 product will provide significant
enhancements to the Console Manager V1.0 functionality.
The V1.1 product will provide user interfaces to run in both an OSF/Motif
workstation or a character cell terminal environment.
Console Manager is designed to manage a wide variety of service systems
including:
OpenVMS VAX systems (standalone and clustered)
OpenVMS Alpha/AXP (standalone and clustered)
RISC ULTRIX
OSF/1 Alpha/AXP
and any other device that meets the following requirements:
ASCII data
RS232C compatible line
EIA based console port
XON and XOFF flow control
I/O buffering.
In addition, V1.1 will provide facilities for use of pseudo-terminals to allow
local host applications to inter-operate with the CM software. Connections to
the CM host platform will be via one of the following transports:
Direct hardware lines
Pseudo-terminal
Host initiated LAT connect (terminal servers)
Host initiated Telnet connect (terminal servers)
The features of POLYCENTER Console Manager are to allow a system manager to
connect to the console of a system without the requirement of being physically
present at the systems console terminal. Typical functions performed while
connected to the console of a system include:
Shutting down or rebooting the manage system.
Performing stand alone diagnostics.
Performing stand alone backup operations.
Upgrading/Installing Operating system software
In addition to performing tasks while connected to the managed console,
POLYCENTER Console Manager allows the system manager/operator to perform the
following:
Viewing remotely console output.
Storing remotely console output on disk rather than on hard copy.
Retrieving historical console data from some Console Manager archive.
Searching console data for particular text.
Scanning console data for text strings that denote events of
specific interest.
It is a goal to provide Console Manager V1.1 Host support for the following
platforms:
RISC ULTRIX
OpenVMS VAX
OpenVMS Alpha/AXP
OSF/1 Alpha/AXP
If you have any questions regarding POLYCENTER Console Manager or the field
test, don't hesitate to call or write to me. Contact information is provided in
the header of this memo.
Regards,
Norma J. Donahue
