50.0. "DECservers required?" by GLDOA::GSORENSEN () Wed Dec 16 1992 21:51

    Hi,

I have pulled the documentation for this product, and while reading
through it I have gotten the impression that DECserver terminal
servers are a requirement. This confuses me. If I am monitoring
DECstations from another DECstation, and all are on the same TCP/IP
Ethernet network, what do I need the terminal servers for? Does
each client really have to be connected to a DECserver with a serial
cable under the above configuration? Can't the connections take place
    over the Ethernet directly?

I would really appreciate an answer, as we are planning to demo this
to Ford, and the requirement to hook up their hundreds of workstations
to terminal servers will kill the sale of this product.

    Thanks,

    Greg,

Here are some thoughts. You'll need to connect the console to either
a DECserver or directly to the system running the CM software.
This is important because it enables you to have control of the system,
even when is is not running an operating system. I also allows you to
have full console control while bringing the remote system down. You
can also 'break' a hung system.

There is also some confusion as to whether or not consoles of
workstations (i.e. DECstations) can be supported. Apparently,
they do not currently provide remote console functionality. I'll
see if I can get some additional info for you. Feel free to call
if you need any additional assistance.

Please post here any information you are able to find
about redirecting /dev/console on a workstation.

Thanks.
Marc.
