27.0. "redirecting /dev/console to port plugged on CM ?" by KETJE::SYBERTZ (Marc Sybertz@BRO - 856/7572) Tue Oct 06 1992 20:39

I would like to know if someone already tested
CM (or even VCS) by redirecting the /dev/console
to a port that is plugged on CM.

My concern is : how can you use CM with Stations
(graphical interface) and not only with Systems (vt).

I know it is more a unix question but it is very
important to know if it makes sense to manage
workstations with CM. (not only DEC, but Sun, ...)

Any inputs greatyl appreciated.

27.1A real good question.OPG::SIMONWed Oct 07 1992 11:0022
Marc,
there is no reason within CM why a workstation will not work, but we
know for a fact that DECstations fail to work. This is an Ultrix/UWS problem
which we have QARed with engineering. Take the 5000/200 as an example. It is
quite possible to set the hardware console to be one of the tty ports rather
than the screen by changing the internal eprom settings. The console prompt
tyhen appears to CM (or a terminal as we tried that). Boot the system and all
appears fine until the Xserver tries to start at the end of the bootstrap.

The Xserver startup keeps failing and looping. We get a message in the X)msgs
file.

This has been QARed on gorge in the UWS database number 4886.

We are looking for a work around.

As far as other platforms are concerned we would love to test (or have anyone
else test for us if they have the hardware platform) any other vendor systems.

If you have any available please try and let us know how and any funnies.

Cheers Simon....

Thanks for the input. and also for the QAR.

Do you really think someone will resolve this
problem on DECstation xxxx ?

Are you able to have a status on it ? (When, who
is working on it, ...)

Concerning the Sun, we have a Sparc Station here.
So I will first phone my ex-colleagues (from Sun) and
then test it here with a terminal to begin.

Will let you know (time frame of 2 weeks ... a lot of
work here).

    Marc,

We were just discussing this issue this morniing and I believe it
is going to be elevated. As to when the detached console support will be
inplemented is anybody's guess at this time. The driving issue is that
this will cause us to loose revenue not to have this support built in.
Hopefully, the money will help to drive the need.

Did anyone find any workaround (for Sun WS [Sparc Station 2]) ?

I have a SS2 and succeeded in changing its console to its ttya port, but
there was no login: prompt on its bitmap display.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yoshiaki
