2635.0. "v32G pools, Where did this come from?????" by AOSG::FILTER (Automatic Posting Software - mail to flume::puck) Mon Oct 28 1996 15:12

Subj: v32G pools, Where did this come from?????

I have v32g on one of my disks. I installed it from
cdrom. It is virgin with no patched modules.
I got 4.4.52.3 for ip_input.o for the cdrom version.
My ping patch to 3.2g is 4.4.49.4 correctly submitted via
v32csupportos-294-spear as FINDPOOL indicated.

It looks like 4.4.52.3 came from mp2os.nightly but somebody
better check on this!

Bob,

Nothing is amiss nor has anything been lost.

What you have discovered is that the v32gsupport pool is
constructed by link / link_alt instead of link / link_os. In
v32gsupportos-32-jmf the file ./kernel/netinet/ip_input.c was
reverted to use the version of the file that comes from the
v32fsupportos pool. The link / link_alt pool structure is what
allows us to select which pool a given file is sourced from.

In mp2os, ip_input.c was at RCS id 4.4.52.3. This file was
identical to the one that was in v32fsupportos.nightly which
was submitted to v32csupportos with the RCS id of 4.4.49.3.
So, through the use of link_alt, the file in the v32fsupportos.nightly
pool was selected to be used instead of the file in mp2os.ssb and
that accounts for the difference that you found in the RCS ids.

You can no longer count on the 'support' versions of files
having a larger RCS id than the 'parent' file. This will apply
to all pools that are constructed with link / link_alt; which are,
at present, v32gsupport and v40asupport.

	Regards,
		James
