Subj: questions regarding DECodeII Server Installation
Hi Tina,
Our group (Digital UNIX Documentation in ZKO3) recently got new Alpha servers and
we are trying to install the ODE Server. I am following the DECodeII Server
Installation instructions from the following web site:
http://www.zso.dec.com/ode/ODE-Docs.html
I was told (by admin and confirmed with Josh Friedman) to install only the
Kerberos Client. I did that; there were no errors. However, when I return to
step 11 (Install Kerberos), the following instructions do not make sense to me:
"You will have to make a Principal name of "kxct" with an "instance" of your
server's unqualified nodename. Unqualified in this case means the left most
portion. Copy the "srvtab" to "/etc/srvtab" and make it world readable."
These instructions seem to apply to a Kerberos Master. Our systems are not set
up to be a Kerberos Master. Do I still need to do these tasks?
Suggestion: It would also be helpful here if the questions asked by the script
were available in the documentation. That way the person doing the installation
could check his/her answers with someone more knowledgeable before actually
running the script. I called Josh Friedman, and we pretty much guessed at the
answers.
~~~~~~
I then tried to install ODE. Below is a script of the install and the errors I
received. (Here too, it would help if the questions asked by the script were
available in the documentation.)
# /usr/sde/ode3.0/install/ode install
Specify your installation type;
Select none to de-install DECode II 3.0.
Select server only for release engineering systems and machines
serving shared sandboxes. Select client for all others.
Enter type of installation, either none, server, or client [client]: server
Which DECode II server installation do you want to do:
1 basic - bring up ode_server and supfilesrv daemons
2 advanced - advanced mode is reserved for experienced
administrators to:
(a) choose which daemons to bring up
(b) set up the ode_server with metric logging
Enter either 1 or 2 [1]: 1
Specify your unqualified nodename for the ode tools server;
this will be the system that /usr/sde is mounted from, or NONE if
/usr/sde is not to be mounted by the /sbin/init.d/ode3.0 script.
Enter nodename for ode tools server, or NONE [NONE]:
Specify how you want current project pools to be mounted at startup;
an answer of yes will cause current project pools to be mounted at startup.
Do you want an odemount done at startup?
Enter yes or no [no]:
rm: /usr/sbin/ode_server3.0: No such file or directory
/sbin/init.d/ode3.0 start
starting ode_server3.0 with logging
/sbin/init.d/ode3.0: /usr/var/opt/DECodeII/ode3.0/ode_server3.0.log: cannot
create
/sbin/init.d/ode3.0: /usr/var/opt/DECodeII/ode3.0/ode_server3.0.log: cannot
create
starting supfilesrv3.0 with logging
/sbin/init.d/ode3.0: /usr/var/opt/DECodeII/ode3.0/supfilesrv3.0.log: cannot
create
/sbin/init.d/ode3.0: /usr/var/opt/DECodeII/ode3.0/supfilesrv3.0.log: cannot
create
Our system configuration is as follows. We have two AlphaServer 1000s, running
Digital UNIX V4.0A and ASE with two (eventually, three) shared disks. We want
the tools on one disk, books on the second, and reference pages on the third.
All three disks are shared to both systems. In theory, if one system goes down,
ASE should be able to fail over to the other system. I am aware that users will
have to reinitialize their Kerberos tickets, but they will still have access to
the tools so they can get a new Kerberos ticket and keep on working.
We followed Josh's instructions for suppping the /usr/sde tools to the system
first and then setting up a cron job to sup the tools on a regular basis. His
instructions are at the following web site:
http://nsa.zk3.dec.com/rengweb/procedures/setup/Tools_SUP_setup
The DECodeII Server Installation instructions said nothing about creating a
/usr/var/opt/DECodeII/ode3.0 directory. It doesn't seem like ode3.0 or
supfilesrv3.0 are running. Would you please help us sort this out?
Subj: Re: DECodeII Server Installation
Special thanks to Jo Fujii for explaining what I needed to do to fix the problem,
Mark Angel for getting new srvtab files for our new systems, and to Josh Friedman
for explaining a way correct the ode_install.
>>> It all works !!! <<<
Thanks very much for your help!,
