2504.0. "pool/project name conventions" by AOSG::FILTER (Automatic Posting Software - mail to flume::puck) Fri Aug 23 1996 17:35

Hi There,

We represent the engineering group for AltaVista search (under
the ISBU). We intend to use ODE for our source control. We've
been able to make a good deal of progress, but are curious about
the conventions used to name pools.

For instance, would it be wise to name submit trees *_submit?
(Does this conflict with sup collections? Will this mess
anything up?)

When is the . character suitable for the name of a project? (Or is it?)

Gee, do you have these conventions spelled out someplace that I
can browse or download?

Thanks very kindly,
--steve

Here is usg we normally use lowercase names. We try and keep a single prefix
for sperate pools that are related and only use .'s in name for frozen pools.

	ptos
	ptx11
	ptcde
	ptdx

	ptos.bl3
	ptcde.bld
	ptx11.kitbld

This way for these related pools it is easy to formulate the name of each pool
by adding the prefix onto it (os, x11, cde, dx, ...).

Thanks, Sean. I had seen this and forwarded it to Josh (I'm today's
"odeaotd".)

Sue/Steve, we have our naming conventions in:
http: //nsa.zk3.dec.com/rengweb
click: ODE & Build Help for UNIX Development

under Getting Help - General Project Information
         Digital UNIX Project Information
click: Roadmap: Naming Conventions of Digital UNIX Pools and Backingtrees

Now these are just our conventions; the ode documentation also describes
conventions, on the same page under
	DECode II V3.0 & V3.1 Documentation
click: HTML Documentation (Manpages, Manuals, Installation Instructions)

and look at the DECode II Project Administration Guide

You can also contact the ode group in DECwest at [email protected] or Dave
Snow at [email protected] (I'm sure he'd be happy to share thoughts).

Hi Josh,
Do you know off the top of your head if we have a place in "rengweb"
where we specify pool-naming conventions?

Thanks,

Sue
