Subj: impact of 'make' changes in ODE V3.1

Regarding the upgrade to ODE V3.1, I half-forgot and half-chose to not
mention this issue in the mail to osf_developers.

The ODE V3.1 kit includes an updated 'make' and 'lib/mk' central
makefiles to support a distributed/parallel build.

The base os and x11/cde/dx pools do not use this make or these
makefiles, so these would have no affect on base development.

However, several groups' builds, including at least the Documentation,
DFS, and possibly QC, do use the "ODE make" and the "ODE makefiles".

Here's my plan:

When we upgrade, 'make' will be left alone, and 'make-ode3.1' will be
the command containing the new make (for each tools architecture).
Also, /usr/sde/ode3.0/lib/mk will be left alone, and lib/mk-ode3.1 will
contain the new central makefiles.

Sometime after the upgrade is complete, the groups who rely on the "ODE
make" should test the new 'make' and makefiles with their product build.
I would like to eventually upgrade to move the new make & makefiles
into place, but I do not have a timetable for this.

These groups may need to do a little bit of setup change along with
the testing of the new 'make' and makefiles before everything works
properly. The ODE release notes point out several changes to pool
rc_files and project Makefiles which are recommended to prepare for
using the new make, even if you're not using the distributed or
parallel capabilities. These need to be reviewed carefully by each
group using the ODE make. Questions should be directed to Dave Snow.

Thanks... -josh
