2308.0. "Request from USEG" by AOSG::FILTER (Automatic Posting Software - mail to flume::puck) Tue May 28 1996 19:28

We are relying on the fast "BOS install", via the bosii command,
to efficiently install systems to test patches on.

The URL for BOS installs is: http://secret.zk3.dec.com/scripts/boskits.pp .

Thanks very much for supporting v30supportos and all following support pools
with BOS install. It's helping us a lot.

But we also would very much like support of BOS installs of the
release pools which back each of v30supportos and following support pools.
We are required by our current rules to test each patch individually
applied to a release pool (and then the patch with all other patches,
which is where we need the support pools BOS installs).
I noticed that BOS installs for some of the later release pools are supported,
but not things like mp1, hw4, etc.
Perhaps these older release pools are supported, but the Web page
doesn't indicate this.

Can you tell us if it is just the Web page that is out of date,
or whether you haven't yet implemented support for BOS installs
for the older SSB release pools back through the backing pool
for v30supportos?

We need these older SSB release pools supported by BOS installs.

	Many thanks,
	sergei

It's more of a question of disk space vs demand. We have so many bos images
with all the active pools, that it's taxing our existing resources as it is.
The current image collection occupies about 5 GB of disk space and the domain
is within 96% of capacity. To date, yours is the only request to retain
images for older pools and as far as I can tell, your group would be the only
one who would even care about them.

If you and your group feel this is important, perhaps you can allocate a
machine with sufficient disk space to act as a server for your group and we
could generate the images you need on it.

The CLD Backlog Reduction program is important.
We need my request satisfied in order to come closer to meeting
the goals for CBR. I am asking my manager Jim Metsch to work with you
to get disk space to satisfy the request I made. I am not the only
benificiary; I sent the mail for a couple of other folks too who
are involved with backlog reduction and complained to me about the
"missing" BOS images. As long as we're backporting to V30 we'll want
the BOS images to save us installation time.
I realize that USEG and Digital customers are the only beneficiaries
of supporting these older BOS images.

Sergei,

This would be a new requirement and one we can consider. Glad to see BOS is being used as much as it is in the support organization. It has taken us a long time to get here. Now we can consider extending the services, but I'd like to hear your management express the priorities for services they need for the support function as a whole.

Again, sending these kinds of requests to odehelp, or other broad aliases, doesn't get the right level of attention. This should be a matter between me and your management to start, so that we can do the appropriate planning necessary.

Tom
