Subj: Fix for: dxmail and bco hangs when [sandbox] dir is NFS mounted from guru
Last Friday I was looking through my recent QARs to see if any activity
was occurring (I've discovered that the QAR enterer never gets notified
when the QAR is answered or closed).
I had entered QAR 45323 reporting dxmail on a workstation hanging
when the Mail directory was NFS-mounted from guru.
Also the ODE bco command on a workstation hangs when the sandbox
is under a directory NFS-mounted from guru (Locus noticed this problem).
My QAR had been answered that it was a duplicate of QAR 42896
which Kurt Strasen had opened late January reporting the dxmail problem.
His QAR had been answered with the solution early February, but he never
noticed since the QAR enterer doesn't get followup mail on QAR updates
(which one would certainly expect).
The solution, which I have verified "fixes" the dxmail hanging problem
and the bco hanging problem, is simply to have your home directory
exported from guru (see guru:/etc/exports) with the "-root=0" flag
(thanks to Kurt for helping with this),
so that suid programs (parts of dxmail and bco) will really be root
rather than nobody. /usr/staff/gu2/kucherov is exported to machine music
with -root=0 and NFS no longer hangs.
If you want this functionality on your workstation, just request
a similar change for exporting your home directory from guru.
I still claim that though -root=0 causes the NFS hangs to disappear,
dxmail and bco have real bugs that should be fixed someday.
The suid programs could certainly check directory/file permissions
and its own id before going ahead trying to lock or do I/O to files
that will hang forever. However, I'll let that slide (ie. won't enter
another QAR) since I've got a decent workaround.
