Here are some steps I take to build in a workon session:
% dir
/u2/shashi/sb/misc/src/kernel
% cd ../../obj/alpha/kernel/BINARY
% rm ufs_vnops.o ufs.mod
% cd ../GAMMA
% ln -sf ../BINARY/ufs.mod.o .
% cd ../../../../src/kernel
% setenv DO_MODULES AUTO
% build MAKE_ARGS=ufs_vnops.o BINARY_
% build GAMMA_relink
Let me know if you still have problems building a kernel.
