When you defunct them, (bci -defunct) and then bsubmit them, it automatically
removes them from the tree and add them to the DEFUNCT list in the
backingtree. If you've already bsubmitted, no further action is needed.

Right you are. And you DID bsubmit them defunct. BUT I believe they are
casualties of secret's crashed disk last Friday. We had to recreate and then
recontruct this partition and they must have come off the backup tape. I
re-nuked them. Sorry about their resurrection :-)
