Mike, I don't know what you're referring to by "doing this improperly"
or "the check_out_config option"?
Removing the link and recreating it manually is the required 1st step
of manual doing 'resb', to allow workon to get into your sandbox; then
you can do a normal 'resb' to whatever you want to back by now, and
outdate your old work (listed in src/.BCSset* file) before beginning anew.
Note that Jim's suggestion was to an 'os' tree - you definitly want to
be backed to an 'x' tree, right? You can use goldminx.bl5.

Thanks, Jim McGinness pointed me at goldminos.bl5 which did
the trick. I am still a little confused about the ramifications
of doing this improperly. Could you either explain the checkout_config
option or point me to some documentation on it?
