Tom, I understand you're the person to talk to about timezone issues.

Nitin Sane, in India, is apparently having problems setting his clock
in sync with what kerberos considers the "real" time. I know we have
no problem with this feature in different timezones in the US; it sounds
like there is a complication with Daylight time.

Sue Y. though you might be able to offer some help here?

Thanks very much. Let me know if you think the problem is outside your realm.

Subject: Problems with kerberose initialization.
Date: Thu, 01 Dec 94 23:49:10 -0500
From: [email protected]

Hi,

I am from Digital India. Now, I am back in India (I was in NJ 2 months
ago) and have set-up the machines which came from UNX for OSF/1 maintenance
project.

I am able to (and am doing daily) sup pools successfully.

But when I try to get myself a kerberose ticket, I get an error
(reproduced below).

> kinit
MIT Project Athena (deil.bbi.dec.com)
Kerberos Initialization
Kerberos name: Purushottam_Sane
Password:
kinit: Time is out of bounds (krb_rd_req)

So, I changed the system time from Indian time to EST. and I can get a
ticket to myself.

> kinit Purushottam_Sane
MIT Project Athena (deil.bbi.dec.com)
Kerberos Initialization for "Purushottam_Sane"
Password:
> klist
Ticket file: /var/dss/kerberos/tkt/tkt12
Principal: Purushottam_Sane@ZONE

  Issued Expires Principal
Dec 1 23:33:12 Dec 2 07:33:12 krbtgt.ZONE@ZONE

One thought... Timezone set up option does not let me select Indian Std.
Time (IST). So, I set up my clock as EST but with current time in India (ie-
+10.30 from EST). May be this could create the above problem. In that case, I
will have to select another timezone (I don't know which one). I see timezone for Egypt and Turkey but not for India (?????????) :-(

So, what is the way out???

Rgds

Hi Josh,

I'll try to look at this closer tomorrow to see if there is a
short-term workaround. However, from initial observation, it appears
that the real solution is to update the timezone files with the latest
PD sources (they now have India timezones as well as many others).
Based on the number of changes to the package, the job of updating our
timezone tools, libc code & data with the latest PD sources looks like
a big hairy monster. However, the need for this keeps tapping me on
the shoulder (QARs & such), so its something I need to start planning
for.

Subj: Re: Timezone problem with ODE & kerberos in India

Hi all,

It seems the kerberos problem is solved here in India.

Here is the brief summary of what I did in this regard.

Digital's standard installation does not provide for Indian timezone
selection. Hence I was running the system with timezone set to EST but with time
set to local time. Since we are 10.30 hours ahead of EST, kerberos server must
have found this time ahead of its own time and hence the error.

In directory /etc/zoneinfo/sources, there is a source file to create
timezones in Asia. I added IST info to this file and created a timezone file
using zic. Now I get the time in IST and still UTC time of system remains in
sync with rest of the world.

I did an experiment of checking out and checking in the source both with
kerberos ticket as well as without the ticket. It worked in first instance and
failed in second.

This proves that kerberos problem is solved.

Thanks all those who helped me with prompt replies.

	Nitin,

how's the network performance between your site and UNX? ZKO?
	Hopefully it's not too bad.

	thanks.

Steve,

Network is performing excellently. Even beyond my expectations.

Normally it can push about 6K/sec of data.(as shown by ftp).

	sup's complete within reasonable time.

Mind you, however, our's is the only traffic on this link.

	So far so good.
