My understanding from an earlier message from Grant Vandyck is that
tools/alpha_OSF1/alpha/hostbin/make is compiled non-shared from the
same sources as /usr/ccs/bin/make. Doing a "what" on the files
indicates that the hostbin make is somewhat older than the latest gold
make, but somewhat newer than the Sterling make. Take main.c from
Sterling and libs.c from gold...all the other files appear to be the
same.
